A/C condensation mess

I've been messing with my A/C forever. After I converted it to R134a it never worked any good. I finally got it figured out and it seems to be working as good as it did back in the old days.  EXCEPT.  It still makes a ton of condensation. I asked about this awhile back about the pipes going into the a/c box and someone suggested putting that black sticky tar tape on them which solved that problem. Now that it is fixed I realize that most of the condensation is coming off the of the a/c heater box dripping onto the floor AND Karen's feet.  Any suggestions how to fix that besides making a drip pan with a funnel on it?

Re: A/C condensation mess

There is supposed to be a drain hose that takes that condensate out through the floor.

Re: A/C condensation mess

What year is the car? On the early cars, A/C and heater were housed in separate units. Where exactly is it dripping from?

Sorry for the confusion, the drain hose is working as designed. The condensation is on the out side of the fiber case and the condenser is on the inside. It gets real cold creating condensation on the outside of the case then drips onto the floor soaking it.

It's a 70. Has both the evaporator and the heater core in the same case separated by a door if I remember correctly. I replaced the heater core in the early 80's and am still running the original evap. The whole bottom of the case gets wet with condensation and as you drive it clings to the bottom and runs all over it till it gets heavy enough to fall off, like rain, so it is constantly dripping all over the floor.

Re: A/C condensation mess

Since I don't have AC you could axe yo'self...."what'duh heck does Sal know" butt.........how bout wrap that heater box in some type of insulation (peel & stick stuff).....poly styrene insulation board (4 X 8' sheet)cut into pieces...anything to insulate it from the air inside your car.? Does the floorboard on that side get hot to the touch(exhaust pipes)?  Backside of the firewall....is it hot?
IF you got really nice cool air INSIDE the box and something hot on the outside.......she'z gonna 'sweat like a Alabammer   prostitute'!

Re: A/C condensation mess

It makes the most sense to be sweating downstream of the evaporator. Is there som type of airflow restriction between the evaporator and the registers? Could you add some insulation inside or outside the box to help prevent the case wall from seeing the difference in temperatures? Just tossing out thoughts.

Re: A/C condensation mess

I be looking for a crack in the pan or drain hose restrictor is missing or blocked.  There shouldn't be that much humidity inside the car with the a/c running and drying the air. Missing restrictor would allow too much outside air updraft making the pan overflow

Also look for openings in the firewall/body where outside air could be entering the interior in close procimity to the evap. Hot humid air entering directly on the box. As Sal said some peel and stick insulation should do the trick.

Re: A/C condensation mess

Crawl underneath the car and look at the termination of the condensate drain. If it is pointed toward the front of the car, the undercar air flow may be keeping the condensate from draining. Also, I have had that condensate drain clog up, so check to verify it is clear.
