Little help .. Overheating ? running too high
My 66 " 289 Aluminum 2 Core 1 .25 inch radiator Electric fan with shroud aluminum heads slightly built roller Cam high rise 4 barrel carburetor ..
Will idle all day long and stay cool at about 160 -150゚
But when I open it up on the highway the radiator seems to gain a lot of heat about 200゚+ Not what I want for my cushion before overheating the engine
Radiator circulates Fine no collapsed hoses under Hi rpm
180゚Thermostat ... I think .. problem could be it's A 160° thermostat ... Any other suggestions ... Want to start running the AC
PS I look at a lot of old posts before asking ... THANKS GUYS

If the motor is only getting up to 200*, you don't have a problem. I don't know where you have the fans coming on, but you should be fine running the A/C. I see only a small increase in temperature with my air running. I would definitely swap a 180* thermostat in it.

150-160 is too cold .... 200 is not too high. Factory thermostat is 190.
Have you setup your fan controller correctly?

fan comes on about 160* -

Cruising around at 150-160 isn't good for evaporating condensation from the crankcase, especially if you do a lot of short runs where the engine doesn't get above that. I run a 180 thermostat and my temp gauge will climb to about 190, where the thermostat opens. Then the gauge will surge to about 205-210 as the hot water passes the sensor and out of the block. The temp will then drop down to 165-170, where the thermostat closes and the whole cycle starts over again. A 192-195 thermostat would work better to dry out the crankcase but I find the 180 stat works for me.
IMO, ideally you would want your fan coming on when the water in the radiator has a temp above 170 or so. Anything below that is a waste of power/mileage via increased alternator drag.

A thermostat is only starting to open at its rated temp.
I wouldn't turn a fan on before 190-195 with a 180.
A factory 95 5.0 with a 195 stat doesn't turn low speed on till 212 ... I have changed that in the tune, butt not by a lot.

Running an engine that cool is literally wearing it out about 1/3 faster than running at 180, and 195 would be better if you can keep it at that temperature.
You should never run a t-stat of less than 180 degrees. Turn the fan on at 195, but when running AC the fan needs to come on as soon as the compressor clutch engages or you risk blowing something up from system over pressure. If the car was moving it would probably be fine, but the minute you stop and the condenser heat soaks big problems will occur. Not sure what you're using for fan control, but there's a simple two relay setup I built to run mine that works great and has been 100% reliable.
What that fan is may determine how well its going to work. I learned years ago to only buy quality fans from reputable sources. My current preference is Spal. Their fans are OE quality and tested under real world conditions, unlike most others. Cheap fans fail due to unsealed motors that seize up, and don't move the kind of cfm the manufacturers claim because they don't test the fans in front of a radiator. I'm very pro electric fans, BUT they have to be the right kind of fan of you are taking a huge risk with your engine.

OK I SEE THE LIGHT !!!
Opened radiator to my surprise found a 2 " x 1/16 " clear silicone debris in it not sure where this came from as I put this motor together myself. did't use any silicone ( except for that yellow gorilla snot on the corners of intake ).. going to have to Back flush it !!
but thought I'd run the engine to check Thermostat supposed to be 180 * NOT !@! opened at around 160 * I'll have to change that too ......
