T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

Hi everyone,

Im running engine/trans from 96 cobra. Im having an issue with my T45 it grinds when I try to put it on reverse even if its on a complete stop and its also hard to go into all the gears and when it does go into gears its really hard, when its in gear it never comes out of gear, Ive checked oil(was ok) I adjusted my clutch cable(I've tryied both tight and loose but i get same result) The thing that I noticed was that while the car is rolling it will go into gears(1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th) without any problems, so I raised the rear wheels and i noticed that when i try to go into 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th gear while pressing the clutch all the way the wheels start turning even though the gears are not completelly engaged and if the rear wheels are stopped I have trouble trying to go into gears. Anyone can tell me for sure If i have to rebuild the trans or what else I can check to resolve this.

THANX

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

Did you just get the car on the road? Did it work properly before?

Usually what you're describing would be a clutch problem. The part about the wheels turning when not "fully" in gear is confusing. With the wheels on the floor and the tranny in gear, where is the clutch pedal when it begins to engage.

I'd try adjusting the cable tighter until you get full disengagment. If the clutch is not fully, completely, totally disengaged, you'll have a hard time going into gear. If the adjustment doesn't work, I'd suspect the clutch itself.

Typical clutch not releasing symptoms. Definitely clutch problem.

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

at- yes I just got the car on the road and it did not do that for the first 100 miles until recently. For example if I try to go into first gear wheels in the air I press clutch pedal all the way to floor but it wont go into gear but as i push on shifter to try to force it to go in gear the wheels start to turn untill it goes in gear. When it does go in gear the car starts to move at half pedal height. Ill try adjusting cable a little tighter to see what it does. If the clutch wasn't releasing wont I have trouble going into gears while the car is rolling too? Sorry but im not into transmissions. lol

thanx guys for your replies

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

65svt, the synchronizer rings are spooling up the gears in the transmission at the correct speed to engage without grinding. You can do a lot of damage to the transmission when the clutch doesn't release properly. When the clutch is working properly about one second is all that is needed for trans gears to stop turning for engaging gears in reverse. Reverse is the only gear that doesn't have synchronizers in modern transmissions. Check all your linkage for proper travel when engaging clutch. Check release bearing for travel, upwards of 3/4 inch.

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

Some more ramblings on the subject. With my T5, I sometimes have trouble going into reverse if I don't hold my mouth just right. Others have reported that shifting into 5th and then into reverse helps. I keep forgetting to try it. MS wrote about a problem he had with a new clutch where it didn't have enough compression distance. There is a remote possibility that you have you have a warped clutch disc. Unusual, but anything is possible. Like hm025 says, the syncros are doing their thing but they won't last long if you don't get the problem corrected. And lastly, it's hard to communicate accurately in the american language. You say you tried adjusting your cable from loose to tight. What loose means to you and what loose means to me can be two entirely different things. But nothing about the cable or clutch arm should be loose. After reading this I see it's time for more coffee to get some of the spiderwebs out of my head. Best of luck to you.

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

Do those motors have needle bearing input shaft bearings in the crank?    Maybe it's dried up and grabbing the input shaft, which simulates no clutch release.

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

It has been my experience with any standard transmission that if the car is on a lift with engine running, the rear wheels are going to turn.  I would not let that be cause for concern.

I don't have a lift, but I have seen this many times as well... only with the rear on jack stands.

Re: T45 grind on reverse and wont shift.

simple clutch adjustment.. not enough pre load on clutch... tighten cable adjustment.. fixed

at, the reason for shifting into gear before reverse. The action of selecting a gear beside reverse is to use the syncros to stop the tranny from turning (thats their purpose) after the trans gears have
stoped turning, reverse is easily selected. All this hinges on the clutch releasing properly.
