Vintage air install

Couple questions.

Instructions have you drilling a few holes to install the vent block off plate.  Is that what you guys have done or is there a better solution that doesn't involve drilling in to cowl area?

Also there is a bracket that requires two holes to  be drilled in to cowl. Wish I had test fit earlier on and I could have welded a couple small bolts/studs to lower cowl so I could avoid drilling these holes. Instructions say apply silicone to screws which will keep from leaking I just hate drilling in to my rebuilt cowl area.

Whats the best silicone to use to seal things up or just use some black RTV?

thanks

Re: Vintage air install

I didn't like the idea of drilling holes in my cowl either, especially at the lowest point were water will pass by. So, I made a "hat" for the opening out flat sheet metal with a bent over lip around the edge. I drilled a hole in the center and installed a 3" bolt with nut sealed with RTV. With a slight bend across the middle, it fit up through the vent hole and settled out on top. A piece of flat bar across the bottom with another nut tightens it down and holds it in place. Then it was sealed with T31 RTV that I used on the engine. I thought I took pictures, but can't find them. One of these days, they will turn up.

With the bracket, I drilled the holes up as high as I could get them without fear of going through the exterior sheet metal. This location was less likely to see enough water to cause leaks into the interior. Sealed it with the same T31 RTV. I bet the black would work just as well.

Re: Vintage air install

Just was thinking about the block off plate.  Why couldn't I take three threaded studs with a hook on the end similar to those used for battery tray hold down.  The hook goes up in to the cowl and over the edge of the cowl hat then the stud goes through hole in block off plate and tightened down with washer and nut sealed with silicone.  Seal around block off plate with silicone.
