I'm using a high torque mini starter sourced from a local parts store. It is on a 86 block that has been bored and stroked to 331CI.
These starters were common on later model Fox bodied stangs up to 1995.

You can use an early 289. 302 or 351W starter from an AUTOMATIC car with that flywheel. I hope you have the appropriate 157 tooth size bellhousing and not one for 164 tooth flywheel. That would be a no-go situation, but most likely the original bell for the toploader was for 157 tooth flywheel.
Any starter designed for a 5.0 in a Fox Mustang will work. After year xx, Ford went to using the same starter on auto and manual cars, but that configuration is same as early automatic starters.
Lots of the guys here have gone to using the high torque mini starter. If you get a FORD version, that is a good way to go. I am still stuck in the 60's with my big yule-log starter. As long as it does the job, I don't have to do any wiring changes.

I have heard the starters out of the Taurus will also fit. Snatch the small case 3G alternator while you are at it.
