Hello Everyone,
I used to post here at bit and life got in the way of my project. A few details about the car:
1966 Coupe, 347 Stroker motor, Trick Flow Stage II cam, Weiand Stealth Intake, AFR 185 heads, Autolite 4100 Carb tuned to this motor and cam profile,T5 Trans with MS ball-bearing clutch pedal, etc.
The current issue is that oil is collecting on the driver's side of the intake after a short drive. There does not seem to be any oil sneaking out through the valve cover breather or gasket. Any ideas on how to stop the leak?
Thanks,
-Tim

thats coming from the bolt itself thats holding the intake down. you may have to take those bolts off.. best thing would be to take off the manifold, and redo the gasket , as the gasket is letting oil up from the block in close to the bolt, which is seeping up.
You will probably have to use RTV in conjuntion with the gasket to make sure this leaks doesnt happen
MS here is the one who helped me do mine, when I was afraid to take bolts off the car :D :D .. haha . I had similar issues.

Thanks! I will get the new gasket and reseal. Can't have my car leaking oil after all the grief I give my Chevy friends about their oil leaks.

HAHAHA.. I never make that comment, as my 65 used to leak like a sieve. One gasket at a time I am getting it under control :D

Hey! Nice to see another Tim in this Sea of Steves….
Gaba's right about the source of the leak, but I would check the torque on those bolts before taking stuff apart. Of course, this assumes you would rather drive it, than work on it.... BTW my 289 leaks in the same spot....after making sure intake was torqued properly. A couple bolts did tighten a bit, and the leak slowed a bit.

Those damn four bolt valve covers. Only way I found to keep them sealed was to run cast valve covers and rubber/steel gaskets. The center bolt ones sealed better because they raised the valve cover rails so oil didn't sit against the gaskets.
We can all agree at least its not a dodge (drops oil drips grease everywhere).

Not sure I can tell from the photos you posted, but do you have a PCV valve plumbed to the carb?

Check out this procedure by MS:

Front seal on the intake manifold can also cause that. Also distributor seal or timing cover seal. But the timing cover seal usually also leaves a telltale puddle on the cover itself. The fan will blow it up and along the valve cover rail.
If bolts are leaking, an aluminum or copper washer will seal them. Thread sealer MIGHT seal them, but you are screwing them into an oil-covered hole, so don't expect much.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
