Summit 8500VS carburator

A week before the Bash I ordered a Summit Racing 8500VS carb for the 67. The carb is a offshoot of the Ford 4100 and is 500 CFM. Bolt on and drive says the advert. Aint so.

The carb is cheap; $300 for the 500 CFM model. I thought I would give it a try since my Holley Street Avenger works, but is not the greatest carb.

Out of the box I pulled the carb apart to replace the jets since I live at 8500 MSL. The carb came with 62 mains, 68 secondary and a 85 power valve. I dropped the mains to 58, the secondaries to 64 and left the PV alone.

After priming the carb it started on the 2nd rotation. A good sign. Once warmed up it would not idle as the idle screws were set way to lean. Another turn on the screws and it would idle.

Driving is OK but while shifting or accelerating from cruise it stumbles. Me thinks a larger squirt from the pump would help. The accelerator pump jets only come in kit form at $60, WTF over.

With the Street Avenger I was unable to adjust the idle screws to lean the idle. I set the throttle plates per spec and drilled out the butterflies for more air. Nothing worked. A fat smokey idle. The summit carb actually responds to idle mixture adjustment. The biggest plus of the carb change.

Time will tell on this cheap carb. I do know that the boosters need some work as there is a lot of flash from drilling, obviously Summit did not feel that burrs had to be removed.

Re: Summit 8500VS carburator

Idle mix issues on the avenger can he caused by incorrectly set secondary idle speed.  Also, might want t retard timing a bit.  That REALLY made a difference on my carb's obnoxious idle fumes, which are pretty much gone now.  See article in tech section on Avenger carb fixes.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Summit 8500VS carburator

Actually the summit carb was modeled after the Holley 4010.
