Someone said running too lean will cause a motor to overheat. I understand fuel helps lubricate the cylinder and is cool going in. But will a motor running too lean run long enough to overheat?

Yes!

How does running too lean cause one to overheat?

Combustion chamber runs cooler temps when it's richer.

Absolutely it can cause overheating. Lean mixtures burn much hotter, and produce more power to a point. That's why the old racer's saying is "lean is mean". But, the leaner the mixture the more heat, and the more the cooling system has to handle. If the system is already marginal it may not take much to push it into overheating.
Fuel really only provides marginal cooling. Most of the cylinder cooling is actually handled by the oil, and to a lesser extent the coolant. The temperature difference in the chamber rich vs. lean is more the product of the burn characteristics of the mixture than the amount of fuel per se. Less fuel means there's more of a chance of every molecule of fuel finding a molecule of air with which to combust, and thus it burns hotter (more complete combustion).

Thanks TKO! I appreciate you being available.

Having timing retarded too much can cause problems too.
Personal experience on this one.
I was just learning about timing and didn’t have a timing light and desert like temps didn’t help either.

Check out this lean machine.
