My new carburator

After the bash and being large time unhappy with my TMI seats I decided to install the new carb that was sitting on the bench. It's a SUM-M08500VS 500 CFM 4V similar to the 4100 and Holley's remake. Since I live at 8500 feet the first thing I did was change jets 4 sizes down from factory.

Well, it was super cold-blooded. Started easy with two pumps and then was damn near impossible to keep running even with feathering the throttle. Once warmed up it seemed to work better but still had a stumble when accelerating. Full throttle was OK. The carb pissed me off, same as the TMI seats.

So I found some 2011 mustang seats to fix the TMI dilemma and I am here to say that was a good choice. I'm going to Los Alamos in the morning and have decided to take the 67 even with its stumble. Carolyn was surprised I would take the Mustang as she thought it ran like crap.

Today I decided to up the jets as it would go uber lean at the touch of the throttle and I will also be going  down in elevation. I popped the top and changed the jets and also checked the accelerator pump linkage. It was loose as a goose and would not start moving the pump until 1/2 throttle. I adjusted the pump and buttoned up the carb. I also checked to make sure the ignition points were still pointy. All looks good.

Test drive time. I headed down 285 to the gas station to fill up (7 miles) and the station had all its pumps closed. I'll grab a beer instead. The carb worked flawlessly to the station and back and AFR was 14.5 or so. I am now happy. New seats, good running engine. Los Alamos, here I come.

Moral of the story is: Don't trust the manufacturers "Runs great out of the box" claim. Check all adjustments before bolting on the carb.

Re: My new carburator

Where in the heck do you live that it's 7 miles to a gas station? Glad y'all got it installed and tuned.

Trust, but verify. Which means trust no one.

Re: My new carburator

That's Great!  I was considering the Summit Carburetor before I went EFI.   If I have any more problems with the EFI I might go back to the Summit!

Re: My new carburator

It runs great out of the box if your engine and driving conditions are identical to theirs.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
