Trip Report.

Last Friday I departed home for Los Alamos, NM, a 640 mile roundtrip. The trip was not exactly perfect. The first time I engaged the cruise control the go-pedal seemed stiff and then there was a feel of a snap and the go-pedal worked, but the CC did not. I kept driving as the go-pedal seemed to work OK. When I fueled in Alamosa, CO I also popped the hood to check out the CC problem. Something had bound and the cotter key holding everything together was gone, the chain for the CC was unconnected, but the throttle linkage was still in place. It was amazing that the throttle linkage rod had not dropped out of its hole. A piece of .032 safety wire put it all back together.

One thing I had noticed on the trip was the the AFR would drop into the 10's going up hill (70 MPH) and the engine would stutter when cresting the hill; while cruising at 70 had an AFR of 14.5.  Low speed driving around town caused a similar stutter.

Saturday morning in Los Alamos I popped the hood and I pulled the manifold vacuum advance and plugged it with a golf tee. No difference. I had had similar, but not exact, problems before and they went away with a distributor rebuilt/curve by the Mustang Barn.

Sunday morning as the sun rose in the east I again popped the hood. This time I pulled the distributor cap to look inside. The points weren't pointy anymore as the gap had closed. I tried to adjust but there was no adjustment left and I did not have a spare set of points. So out came the needle nose pliers and I adjusted the arm on the points so I could get .017 gap or close. The engine ran a lot better, I mean a lot better.

She still run uber rich climbing hills at speed and stumbles when cresting the hill. Drives me nuts. This week I will bring the ignition system up to par. Then I'll tackle the carburetor.

As for the install of the 2011 GT/CS seats. They rock!

oh trust me, I'm prepared.  Had i guy tell me that when the stuff hits the fan, he was coming to my place. I told him to bring his own stuff because I wasn't doing all this prep work for him......
To keep it mustang related, I have points and condensor ready to change back over if necessary..

I once read...............'When the  $--t  hits the fan....it will not be distributed evenly!'
How many other 'preper do we have on here?!

Re: Trip Report.

Don't feel alone Gary, I'm still running points in mine. Easy peasy. But carry some spares of those small ignition parts dude.

Not only points, but magnetos.

Re: Trip Report.

Y’all could just wrap up a blue grommet module in aluminum foil in a lead box in your trunk for backup!!😁. Next to your Geiger counter!

I understand your reasoning though.

Re: Trip Report.

I'm really surprised that people still run points and condensers. Wow...

Points work great. Granted one must service them once a year which gives me an excuse to pop the hood.
