A buddy of mine has a nicely built 351W in his Falcon which he wants to replace with a more tricked out motor for shows. I have driven the car and the motor runs strong and has a great cam. He will sell me the complete engine less the headers for $5,000. My current 289 runs strong but is just a C-code with bolt-on performance parts. I know I need special shorty headers to make the conversion, but is their anything else? Is this swap worth the cash? upload images

MS can give you all the 'heartaches and joys' of a 351 in a 66 Mustang. I do know they are pretty tight between those shock towers. They make headers(long or shorties) to fit. I have heard one issue is its sooo tight heat has a problem getting OUT from under hood!
If UR handy eliminating the shock towers is the ultimate answer.......then everything drops right in! Prolly slide entire engine WITH headers attached right in. Especially if you make the radiator support top rail removable like DC!
I vote YES. You can get some money back by selling your old 289.

It's good that you can see it run, check oil pressure, cylinder pressure etc. What parts are in it? It comes with the carb, dist, fuel pump, etc? I see it has alum heads, how many miles?
Just trying to determine the $5K price tag.

If you buy it, get all of the front bracketry. Much of 289 brackets do not fit and 351w brackets are more difficult to find unless you spend all that money for aftermarket brackets. Get the engine mounts too. There are more than one kind.
Shorty headers are better too. They give more space under the hood and create much less heat. Long tubes give a wow factor, but not a great deal of added power. And, clearance under the car can suffer.
But don't be afraid of trying. I did it in my driveway with my then 15 year old som.

I don't know the details of all the internal parts, but the other parts of the car build are really good. All brackets would be included, complete running motor, less the headers. The motor mounts probably wont be usable because the front end was changed when the shock towers where modified. It seams a little expensive and I was thinking upgrading to a 347 stroker would be easier.

I also may want to add aftermarket power steering for a quicker AutoX ratio..

After doing a search and some reading, I am going to pass on the 351. Swapping to a 5.0 sounds like a much better option then the 351. I would actually prefer to add a cam and heads to my existing 289. The 289 runs strong with no leaks or oil burning. I have run it on the track a few times with no problems. Is upgrading the top end of the 289 worth the effort?

It could be a nice "high-winding" toy butt..........not so much for street duty where TORQUE is king. You have good gears and a T-5 so a SBF with a hefty camshaft would work OK on the street. Maybe some AFR heads and good ignition you could see 375+ HP! Anything much over that needs a longer stroke/bore. (think 331-347)

$5000 sounds like alot for a used 351
