i'm currently rebuilding a 16:1 ratio steering box for a 66 mustang that had a tag with HCC AW 6D12B. my question is the races for the 2 worm gear bearings that are in the box have a bearing under the race! The races both spin freely, but the rebuild kit races are just standard fixed races. do I leave the old races? I like the idea of them being able to freely turn (less friction) or do i just put the new fixed ones in?

I would imagine the races should not turn.

The outside of the race is not a bearing surface and I don't think it is meant to turn. The balls in the bearing do all the bearing stuff, not the outside of the race.

If the race is turning in the pocket, the pocket is worn, it shoiuld be a press fit same as the inner race on the shaft.
I have seen both conditions where the race pocket and shaft have been scored as to be unservicable.
The cause, a 50 year old steering box with dried up grease and siezed bearing.
Every one should put new grease in the steering box at the first attempt to cure steering issues.

I finally just decided to knock out the races. they were just loose. new ones are tighter fitting.

I would be suspect that the new bearings fit tighter since bearing races are very hard and not prone to wear.

What comes in the kit?

The kit was SU-491 from Virginia classic mustang.
