I have a 351W bored and stroked to 400cid, nickel plate long tube headers. Wanting to go with a side exit exhaust. I'm planning on using 2.5" tube and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers with the entry and exit on the same side so I don't have to use glasspacks or make a big loop out the backside of a muffler.
In such a short exhaust system, is it worth having a crossover (H or X)? Or is there still benefit other than the sound difference?

All the "experts" have come back now and say.......other than changing sound and "balancing-the-exhaust-gases" there really isn't a significant power boost from using an X/H-pipe set-up in a street application. Maybe high RPM /Cup racing butt-knot street apps. They DO reduce exhaust drone when using Blowmaster-40's and NOT running tailpipes butt power boost....uhhhhh nope!
Suggest using largest tubes possible and soft bends in the pipe. (I REALLY vote for zero mufflers buttt..I know how that would go over)

I drive this thing almost daily in the summer and can't stand the noise, and "drone" noise is a no go for me. So maybe starting with 3" into a 2.5" H before the muffler (which only comes in the 2.5" flavor). Maybe reducing into 2" at the tip.
I've heard and read that as the exhaust cools it slows down, so a reduction of diameter forces the speed to stay up. Anyone think is bunk? Or only matter with high revving race motors?

Sounds good to me (pun intended!)......even if it IS a race engine trick don't see how it could 'hurt' if done on the street.

PS....But what about the megaphone tip theory were the mega phone creates a negative pressure wave which draws-out/slight vacuum the exhaust for a more complete fill of the combustion chamber?

I haven't heard that one. Maybe reduce the size and end with a 6" fart can tip like a Honda? Surely that's worth 50hp.

If nothing else. It stabilizes the exhaust system.

It definitely provides a point that keeps the individual pipes from being able to roll. It definitely changes the sound. Power wise, couldn't say for sure. In theory you are taking advantage of maximum scavenging by always having draw through the system since all 8 cylinders are now in effect connected instead of essentially having two straight 4s with their own exhaust.

Love this 'new' picture/image thingy!
This is the 'grandpa'of the X-pipe...I think

Those are all insane.

Well we do live in an insane world...

Mike... looks like you’ve got the hang on pics now.🤙🏼
Looks like the Doug’s equal length headers took #4 and #8 and swapped sides only so all pipes could be equal length.
Novel idea...except for possibly scorching your oil.
Bet those must have been fun to work around...street or racing.
Stay safe!

Try Spintech.
They make a side exhaust for Mustangs. Looks like it needs an X or H pipe.Offline

We've got these spintech's on the 66 with an X pipe. Love the sound, but louder than most folks would like. Spintech does make street mufflers. These XR-90's are more of a race muffler.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
