3G alternators and 1 wire alternators are different things. The 3G alternator is a Ford alternator that has a built in regulator and has an input wire that it uses to sense the voltage so that it can operate more efficiently. The 1-wire alternator does not have a sensing wire. I'm not really sure how it decides how much voltage to generate. Pretty much the GM 1-wire alternator only has a ground wire and the output wire to the battery positive. (So 2-wires really)
I installed a 3G alternator (the 95amp version). I'm happy with it.

One of the things a 3g does well, is sensing and supplying voltage needs at low rpm. PA Performance do have a 1 wire version of a 3g with a different regulator. I wouldn't use it, whats an extra coupla wires to get the full benefit of the swap?
Electric fan ... I'm a believer, some aren't ... but only with OEM stuff. A Contour fan should fit a 24" radiator.

For the alternator, go to your favorite parts house and buy a 1993 Taurus alternator, NEW! That will get you a 180 degree clocked case that should bolt right in. Should come as a 135 Amp version.

Please note that when going to a high amp alternator that they were designed for serpentine belts and running a single sheave pulley, slippage may be audibly noticed.
My 135 amp 3-g single pulley does occasionally screetch.

Rudi is absolutely correct about single V-belts on high amp alternators. However, you can get a dual V-belt alternator drive for this application. It was a factory option and you used to be able to purchase a matched set of two V-belts for this application. I haven’t been able to find the matched sets lately, so we have to try to make matched sets ourselves.

ohh yaay!! come over if you can one day if you want to look at that exact setup in person!( i have it all apart) I have a 3G alternator setup and installing 24" radiator also as we speak!! :D
Done with the 16" and electric fan setup. All parts here for my 24" radiator setup, I have made the cuts and dry fit it all, now working on heater box, and will start assembling soon! BTW you dont need an aluminum radiator for the 289 .. just a copper 24" works.. it looks stock ,and works better with the mounts that are available .. I bought copper
here is what I bought for my 3G alternator:
This setup has been running flawlessly!
my alt belt never slips! no noise at all

If you search on eBay for ALT-1807, you will find a 3G 95amp alternator that has a 2 belt pulley installed. This is the kind of alternator I installed. It is a lot less expensive than many I see listed.

Rudi, I have recently found out about the white 3G regulator. It has something called LRC (load response control).
From what I can tell, it is something like a soft start feature that is time based.
I've been wondering if it would be helpful to people in your situation.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
