Hello everyone , i would ask if the rear main pin used for rope seal ( and removed ) can cause an oil leak that i can't stop. I have changed two times oil pan gasket and seals , use black rtv and still have oil leaks . Looking inside the bell with a borescope seems is not from there that leaks . Seems that major guilty is the oil pan seal and that hole .
Does it possible that hole is causing oil leaks ? is enough to close it with black rtv and new seal ? If will not work where i will look at ?
thanks for any suggestion

On other Fords I've "worked-on" fixing the rope real main bearing seal is often "disappointing" Especially when making the repair with engine still in car.
Can you "just live with it"? How much is it leaking? A puddle? Several drops over night?
If it 'drops' I would just put absorbent under the car and live with it.
If its a puddle....I would pull the engine and "fix-it-right" and put the engine back in.
Are you using 30 weight oil?....40 weight? (not synthetic I hope)
More information needed.

Hello 6sally6 ,
If was only for several drop over night , i will put some under the car and live with it .
But is not that simple - drops are flying all around and mostly on long tubes , and when dry nothing can remove it. Also makes dirty all undercar .
Over night is 10 /20 drops . About oil i am using motul classic mineral 20 /w 50.
Now i have buy some dye tracer and i wanna see exactly where spread .
I got the feelings that oil pan and related seals give me trouble , and main seal is not guilty .
The engine has been rebuild 2 years ago , removed the rope for a modern seal , serviced by professional shop 50 years , so i wanna trust them .
Other than that seems is dirty only the lower part of internal bell ( i can see that is open because i got the plate for automatic in front of bellhousing ) .
the last thing is about puddle - is not . Mostly is a slight / major loss coming from the rear part of oil pan .
I have changed oil pan gasket and seal , first time a couple of weeks ago , for a major leaks on the ground .
After a couple of ride i have seen less oil around , and i add some black rtv outside rear oil pan . it was little better
As leaks doesn 't stop i put my nose in that spot , and i see that rtv was moisted with oil .
That's why i think is pan issue .
Thanks for any suggestion

It's a long shot, but try the rear of the valve covers. Mine leaked for years but it looked like a seal problem.

I changed my rear main seal 3 times with the engine in the car. I have a unisteer rack so I had to drop that down too. Major PIA. So mine still leaks a small puddle when running. When I go around corners and I have the windows down I can smell a hit of burned oil so I believe it might be going on one of the heads. It looks clean but at the very bottom of the belhousing you can see where the oil leaks from. So Im not touching it until the engine goes. Then Ill opt for a crate engine and pull it out. Steve69

Check the seal at the back of the intake manifold. Often the oil runs down the back of the engine so seems to be from the rear seal.
Cork intake seals were the worst offender, always use silicone stand alone in those areas, front and rear.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
