1965 5.0 conversion electric fan for champion cc251b 3 row radiator

Im trying to get an electric fan for my champion cc251b radiator but the one that is popping up on google for this radiator says that it is 4 1/2" deep and I do not have enough clearance to fit it. Anyone know of a fan & shroud that will fit this radiator or how we can modify it to fit?

Conventional wisdom is that most aftermarket fans are not worth the money.
  If you are determined on electric you, would be better served going to a V6 Contour fan. The fit quite well and outperfrom just about all the rest of the ones out there. Rock Auto has them for less than a lot of useless single set up ones.
 I have run the entire gamut of electric pushers, pullers and finally settled on a engine driven 5 blade mechanical O/E fan and custom made shroud.

How did you go about making your custom shroud?  Would starting with a factory shroud be a good idea?

Factory shrouds are mostly made from plastic.
I made mine from sheet aluminum, I”lol see if I can find some pictures on how I did it, post em later.

Hey Ross!  Glad to see that you are still plugging away at your car.  For electric fans, I have used Rudi's suggestion of a Contour fan, but they are 24" wide, if I remember correctly, and your Champ item is 17" wide.

Roslo,

You can buy just the aluminum shroud from your source, it is 1/2” thick. Then you could buy a Spal 30100400 fan for $95. The fan is 2” thick. That give you a shroud/fan thickness of 2.5” thick. Probably going to be hard to find a combination thinner. I tend to agree that the automakers fans are the best, but they aren’t thin usually

Hey Ross;

I made my own shroud from sheet metal back in '06 and it works great with my clutch fan.  If you are interested you can PM your email addy to me and I'll shoot you all the pix I took of the project.  They aren't real step-by-step, and you need to do a little welding but it looks decent, is two-piece for removal, and seems to work great.

I am using contour fans they work great, I live in Yuma Az and I do not have a overheating issue. I am in the process of rewiring mine to run Low and Hi on the cheap I will post pics when I'm done.


65 coupe, 351w, c4, power disk brakes, power r&p, vintage air.

I run a SPAL 30102082 in an aluminum shroud I built with a fan controller I also built.  Quite happy with it.

My initial comment was as Rudi surmised, run of the mill aftermarket electric fans are junk.  I would only run an OEM or SPAL fan.  SPAL actually tests their products correctly (pushing or pulling through a radiator core), and uses OE quality sealed housings.  A fan should draw 10 amps per 1,000 cfm.  So a 3,000 cfm fan should draw 30 amps.  My SPAL pulls over 30 amps at start up and 25+ in operation.  You'll see cheapies rated at 3,000 cfm and they claim to draw 18 amps, which is clue one that they are not what they are claimed to be.  Often the housings are not sealed, so the first time they see water the motor locks up solid and they become a throw away.

Before you go electric, you should consider that is is much simpler and less complicated to fit a nice shroud and mechanical fan.   I lost count of how many I have helped to remove all that electric junk and install a tried and true working mechanical setup that does the job.

Gaba is doing it on his car right now.

Debate LOL yes we went down that road
I ended up with a Derale 18217 fan  17" round and 2-5/8" deep, and a Autocoolguy.com PWM AC85 controller. No shroud as the fan pretty much covers the whole rad. Working well now with 6 deg timing.

Exactly... I always shudder when I hear people fitting electric fans. On my car, I fitted the 5 blade mechanical fan and it still has the original reproduction radiator (not aluminum) and it seems to work ok for me.
