Swapped out my 16:1 power steering ratio Flaming River (no bashing me allowed on the FR box (: ) steering box today for a rebuilt 19:1 manual ratio box from Dan at Chockostang. Oh Lord what a difference! It's like I now have power steering.
Dan and Carol are an absolute joy to do business with. I tore down an OE 16:1 box with the intention of rebuilding it, but Dan offered to swap me my Midland power booster for the 19:1 box. I also got a rebuild kit for 16:1 box which I'll rebuild later. If you haven't torn down a Mustang steering box I'd recommend it. The engineering of the ball and worm is ingenious in my opinion. If your stock steering is sloppy, it's from worn parts,
not the design.
Last week I did away with the under car axle drop outlet on the Walker Quiet Flow mufflers and took them out the side in front of the wheels with 3" oval stainless tubing. What a difference. The exhaust sound is completely different and sounds much better. The exhaust out the side doesn't interfere with having a conversion in the cabin.
I also swapped out the V belt and pullies in favor of a serpentine belt. I had the alternator and crank pullies from a 1986 5.0 motor, and only needed to buy the water pump pully. I made an adjusting rod with right and left hand rod ends for secure adjustments. No more belt sqeeling from the alternator.

Oh ye of little faith Bob. I never doubted your skeelz. I've checked them several times and they've passed with flying colors. And I trashed my torque wrench just so I don't get any crazy ideas

Yeah, Bob...
My “torque it til right before it breaks” spec does not apply to adjusting wheel bearings.

Good work, RPM, Dan rebuilt my box a couple years ago. Drove like an absolute dream. I could not believe the difference. It had about 2000 miles on it when I left for the BASH in Michigan this year. It developed a bind just to the right of center during the trip (identical to where it was before the rebuild). Makes driving at highway speeds a little more interesting that I care to experience. All to say, I recommend that you drive yours a lot during the warranty period......

Now you tell me. My general practice is to torque it till the fastener breaks, then back it off a quarter turn.
Thanks Tim, will do.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
