And with the idea that I would upgrade my stock 289 around these heads. Kinda thinking it might require changing my stock pistons and that might shelve this idea.

According to'what-you-wanna-do-with-the-car!' Hi-po semi street racer...then go with the 351($750.00max)
Bump up the performance a little on the 289 then I like the heads because.......
your heads now are prolly 58cc chambers so these heads will still work with
your stock pistons. Forget the high lift rockers. ($500.00 is a great price if
the heads haven't been abused/cracked.

The heads would work fairly well on a 289 with the right cam, headers, exhaust, intake, and carb. $500 is a decent price, but you'll spend a couple hundred getting the bent valve fixed and having them freshened. I would never install them without having them freshened/checked by a machine shop. You never know how they were used and people tell all kinds of lies to sell stuff.
The 351 is also a good choice, depending on how much you pay for it. Again, I assume going in that it needs to be fully machined, new pistons, etc. So I'm with 6sally6 that I wouldn't spend more than $750 for it.
