I saw/heard a wankel powered econo box at the drag strip several years back. The owner was also a certified Wankel engine repair tech.
This was 20 years ago, I guess, and he was turning in the low 10's! Needless to say he had it  'modified'  to pretty much the max.
It had to be spinning 12-15000 rpms +. He was kill'in a bunch of V-8 iron in the gasser class.  A lot like hornets in a tin can...and just as bad!

I was ready to buy a Datsun 260Z turbine powered for sale in Maryland 7 yrs ago. Had a 50.1 gear box in front of the stick box. It was very rusty. The price seem right, but I waited to long.

I saw that rotary Mustang in a Dallas show back in 1987. I spoke with the owner.

I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO GET A 1986 SVO 4CYL TURBO 5 SPD DRIVE TRAIN AND SWAP INTO MINE NEXT.... I ALREADY HAVE A 5 SPEED IN MY CAR OUT OF THE THUNDERBIRD TURBO COUPE. JUST TO BE DIFFERNT....MORE POWER THAN I HAVE NOW AND I BET BETTER MILEAGE.

You really want to have fun with it check out Esslinger Engineering.  Still doing crazy stuff with turbo 2.3s.
