I COULD UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD HE SAID....ITS A SOUTHERN THANG

Its funny, I've never identified as being a Southerner, but I also understood every word he said. Delawareans maybe have a bit of an identity crisis. I mean, we have a NASCAR track in Dover, which would seem to say Southern State. We didn't secede from the Union during the Civil War, but we also didn't join the Union. There were volunteer regiments that fought for both sides.
Southerners don't consider us Southerners, yet Northerners don't really consider us Northerners either. Apparently 154 years after the end of the Civil War we remain a Boarder State. But that toe in both worlds, body in neither deal seems to allow me to understand people from both. Maybe next we get a guy with a real thick New England accent and put it to the test...
Just stay out of the bayou in Louisiana. That's just unfair...

Talk like what??? Did he have an accent, I couldn't tell!!!
Kinda lost me when I figured out it was a Chabby engine.
Be careful Bob, spinning tires into the ga-rage means the back wall is coming up quick!!

True, but as the sport has expanded they've added northern and western tracks to the circuits. The track at Dover opened in '69 (I had to look that up). I knew it was old enough to be mentioned in Smokey Yunick's book.
There was also a scene in Days of Thunder where they were at Dover. It's the part where he hits the pit wall during his initiation montage, and is noted as Dover, DE.
I will say that Delawareans consider ourselves from either north or south of the Canal (that being the C&D Canal connecting the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River). New Castle County is basically split by the Canal and Kent and Sussex counties are below New Castle. Its a persistent stereotype despite massive development over the last two decades in lower New Castle County that has even begun to bleed into southern Kent County. Dover has always been pretty good sized due to the Air Force Base, but Wilmington is still the largest city by a good margin. The accent changes a bit the farther south you go in the state.
