Yeah, butt... it's lefthand drive, so  was built for use with Dot 3.
Had one of that car till someone ran a stop sign.   It used Whitworth wheel insecticide.

Yes we survived, how I dont know. My brother and sister made me ride on the rear shelf of the 55 on all the road trips, that way they had more room.

Survived?!!!  I want to know how many were conceived in the back seat of that Pontiac!

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

Hopefully one day I'll be looking back at 60+ years, but I can answer the question: Humans are actually really had to kill.  I tell all expectant parents this.  They get all caught up with childproofing and treating kids and babies like they're made of glass.  I don't think caves were childproof, yet humans survived in them for tens of thousands of years with things outside that would eat them.  Locks on toilet lids?  For God's sake, if kids are going to drown in the toilet maybe we should let Darwin do his job...

Reminds me of my favorite King of Hill episode.  Hank takes over an overnight for Bobby's boyscout troop.  The plan is to keep them inside and feed them Lord only knows what allergy avoidant foods.  Hank takes them outside and makes a fire to cook smores and hotdogs.  The other parents have a meltdown.  His response was "I fed them some sugar and took them outside.  When I was a kid we played outside, made fires, and used knives.  Sometimes we got burnt or cut.  Its how we learned that things were hot and sharp."

Yet we wonder why the younger generations seem to be getting dumber and dumber...

I mean, no, I don't wonder.  I $%^&ing know exactly why it is.

Oh, and cars used to be made from METAL.  That's how we survived.

I still have this issue of Popular Science. When it came out I had my drivers license for about six months. When I saw this helpful tip I went out in the back yard and duplicated it. Used it for four years until I left home. Probably poured fifty gallons of oil in that hole. Several of my neighbors used their used motor oil to kill weeds in the alley. Makes you wonder how we have any clean drinking water these days.

On a related note: a number of years ago the city of Galveston, Texas experienced an episode of crude oil washing up on their tourist beaches (as happens occasionally in Texas). By the time the oil reached the beach much of the light ends were weathered off leaving sludge. That sludge mixed with the beach sand to make a fairly solid muck. The City of Galveston used front loaders to pick up the muck and load it into dump trucks. They then transported the oily muck to a large vacant lot in the city. They spread out the muck, then covered it with a layer of granular fertilizer. They added layers of muck and fertilizer until they ran out of muck. Then they covered the whole pile with a layer of topsoil. A year later all the oil was gone, eaten by little microbes. All the shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico probably contain some of those microbes developed over the years.

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

My how times have changed!! I stood in the seat of the then new bump side  Ford truck of Dad’s till I was too tall to stand straight up. I have scars on my forehead from hitting a bed frame and falling off the tailgate, but nothing from hitting a dash. That protective arm was there for panic stops and I was lucky!!

Poured a bunch of oil down fence lines till it became taboo to do so.

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

Yeah we used to do all those things and stand on the back of the bed of the Model AA truck bed edge on our tip toes while the driver drove as fast as he dared. If you fell off you had to walk home. Used to stand on the running boards of the GMC and whip around make believe hairpin turns. If you got thrown off ....... It's amazing my brother is alive. Used to do the same oil trick with the all the airplane and car oil. When the city commandeered the property the EPA found the hole and another one that was under a house foundation nobody knew about and made us clean it up on our dime.

Road to a lot of little league base ball games in the back of dads pickup with my buddies. Away games, half the team would be in there. They would arrest you today for these kind of things.

You're right!! Went many a mile in the back of a truck. (Sometimes standing up) It's amazing I'm not blind......flying bugs and crud and I'm hurling down the road standing in the bed of a truck.

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

I'm proud to say I can identify with all of your pics Sal. My family had a 52 Hudson when I was a youngster. My little sister was a toddler and we used to put the enormous center arm rest down in the back seat and that became her car seat. Used motor oil was poured along the fence line to keep the weeds off of the electric fence.

One of my first recolections auto related that comes to mind is being in the front seat of my dads 31 Model "A" and touching the bit of fuel seeping from the  gas gage in the center cluster. I was about 5 or 6 years old.
loved the smell gas ever since.

This is exactly how I did this as a kid. My sister now lives in the house and always wondered why the flowers would not grow along the foundation wall I used for my oil dump.

We also had an incinerator in the backyard where we burned the household garbage. I was the official fire boy.

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

We used to burn all our trash for years when I was a kid.  We didn't live in City limits and either no independent hauler would come out there, or it never occurred to us.  When you live on a farm you tend to handle that stuff yourself I suppose.  I think we only stopped because a neighbor who lived on the other side of the woods was going senile and kept calling the fire department every time we would burn the dump.

I dumped oil on rocks for years (20 years or so back).  Hasn't stopped weeds from growing over them in recent years.  Or I'd use it to start bonfires.  Motor oil and just a splash of gasoline worked about as well as Diesel fuel, until the oil became mostly synthetic and became really hard to ignite and doesn't burn well even if you can get it going.

I always loved sitting in that backward facing seat in the back of my Dad's station wagon counting bugs on the bumper of that Mack truck following about 6 inches away!

Re: Lotsa you fellows are 60+ years old, I got a question fer ye..........

I’m not 60. I remember days of riding in back of pickup with my brother to get to town.  Face and arms would be tingling and numb by the time we got there.  The days when my cousin would drive under low branched trees and my dad would laugh just as much as we did.😂
