What would be required to convert a 4r70w (4x4/awd) from an explorer to a 2wd?
Offline
Probably output shaft and tail housing. Butt .... you need an empty box to swap the shaft ... first in, last out.
I'd keep looking for a 2wd.

Haven’t taken one apart that far, figured I’d ask the question....first.

A guy locally has s complete 5.0 explorer drivetrain on CL. All wiring, 5.0 with efi and computer, 2wd 4R70W and disc brake rear end with 3.55 traction lock. All for $600 asking.
If I had room, I would buy it just to get the tranny for my Shelby. It has an AOD now. Needs something that shifts better.

Sounds like a good deal Steve.
Perhaps someone is looking for 5.0 and Explorer rear end near you.
