I have been reading this forum for several years and it is hands down the best forum on the internet for Mustangs. I have been doing a restomod on a 68 coupe for several years and have recently started again after life's priorities sidelined it for several years. A synopsis of what I have done so far is:
-Stroked (331) 5.0 with Edelbrock Performance RPM heads, Edelbrock RPM Airgap intake, Comp Cams XE274HR-12, Fitech fuel injection, MSD Distributor and electronic control
- World class T-5
- 9" rear end with limited slip
- Front disc brakes
- rebuild steering, suspension
- frame connectors
- AAW wire harness
I have figured out part of the problem with taking so long to do the build is I change my mind and go back and make changes before I can even drive this thing! My current project is MustangSteve rear Cobra disc conversion. I have all the components but wanted to get opinions on whether I need to get dust/splash shields for this conversion. I have read peoples opinions elsewhere on the web but would really value the opinion of those here. If I do need these shields, does anyone know what would fit?
I have been collecting interior parts over time and have the TMI Sport R door and quarter panels. I am looking for a good dash pad and am not sure which way to go. The basic one CJ Pony sells has horrible reviews. The TMI Sport R dash pad is twice the price. Does anyone have personal experience with the Sport R dash pad? Does anyone have knowledge of a good quality dash pad. I have heard good things about the one Mustangs To Fear sells. Anyone have experience with MTF? I appreciate any input.
Back when I was doing the torque boxes, floors, etc, I went with the one piece seat platform in order to help stiffen the body. Now I am looking for carpet and have come to the realization the one piece may have been a mistake. I can't find anyone who sells a kit for a coupe with a one piece platform. Anyone dealt with this? Should I take the one piece out or is there a way to make one of the carpet kits work?
These are just a few of the questions swirling around in the cerebral carcass, but I have been rambling too long. Again, I appreciate any information on these questions!

I have never had splash shields on my 66 with cobra brakes. This has just not been an issue. I have driven the car over 40,000 miles without issue, in torrential downpours on road trips as well as city type driving.
The only concern I would think of would be a leaking ball joint boot, but with the type of car most of us build, that is just not a concern either.
I have a big pile of brand new front splash shields from 2008 GT Mustangs. I toyed around with seeing if they would work. Yes, with some fabrication and some small brackets welded on, they could work. But, I never had that much excess time or desire to mess with it. I kind of like being able to visually inspect the rotors with the view not hindered by the shields.
Could you not use convertible carpet in your car?

I have the MS GT conversion front and rear. The fronts have been on it for ten years. The car gets driven a good bit. I've never had shields on it. Doesn't seem to matter. I have dash pad I bought from Virginia Classic 15 years ago. I think it is TMI. It still looks good.

As far as the carpet, I installed a one piece seat riser and convertible inner rockers on my 69 Mach 1, and used convertible carpet which fits fine. I'd think if there's any extra carpet in the rocker area it could just be trimmed like you'd normally do.

They are not just splash shields but also there to keep brake dust from getting all over the running gear.
When I did my MK VII rear brake conversion the Lincoln "dust" shields were unobtanium so had to fab them.

I've had rocks wedge between rotor and shield more than once ... that's a real uh-oh moment. Prefer to run without them. Butt I am looking for a set for Kelsey Hayes discs for originality reasons.

It's been a while, but I purchased my last dash pad from Mustangs Plus. Fit perfectly. I have always had good results from them.

I guess I could use convertible carpet. I just assumed since I don't have convertible inner rocker panels, there wouldn't be enough carpeting on the edges by the doors. As far as splash/dust shields, not going to worry about them now. Thanks for the responses.

I wonder why car makers waste money on splash/dust shields if they are not needed.
Someone needs to tell them, could be worth multi millions.

Therein lies your answer. If they did nothing, the OEMs would not install them. They obviously serve some function in the OEMs' eyes. One thing worth noting is that I've heard them called both splash shields and dust shields over the years. I lean more to "dust". Water isn't going to affect disc brakes; its one of the things making them superior to drums. Decades of off roading has born that out. I think the truth may then be that they are in fact to prevent brake dust from coating everything on the underside of the vehicle, as Rudi noted. Now, possibly they do help reduce the spray of water coming off the brakes and protect chassis components and the body from salt spray in the winter. On the other hand, when did the OEMs seem to want to prevent things from rusting? The sooner a vehicle rots out the sooner you have to buy a new one. The jury remains out...

I have no knowledge which body type has the larger carpet, but I ASSumed the convert was bigger. Why else would coupe and fb guys switch to convert carpet when adding the convert rockers and seat riser, other than monkey see monkey do? But I can't see why convert carpet would be smaller. Why would coupe guys swap to convert carpert, and not just use the carpet in the coupe? You'll be fine with the convert carpet.

Rudi, my guess...so kids don’t stick their fingers in rotating machinery just like on the box fan in the garage.🤪😂
I’ve had rocks get wedged in between the shield and rotors on other cars as well.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
