    Toll roads

    OK I need a little help here. I know there are toll rds and got tagged in NC with a rental car. Paid a bunch with the fees and fines. So when I leave SC and head north to NY how can I avoid these fines. I have been online and the EZPASS seems like a good idea but we dont have or sell them out here in the west. I cant rap my head around this one.

    I live in NY. They have done away with most of the toll booths. They take a picture of your plate and send you a bill in the mail. If you have a ezpass account linked to that plate you pay less. In the other states that accept ezpass they read the ezpass that you stick to your windshield (NY also). I would call the phone number listed on their website and ask how you can obtain one or their recommendation so you payless and avoid fines. Because if you drive in an ezpass lane with out one you'll pay a fine as you found out. Hope you have a good reason to come to NY, I can't wait to move out and I've lived here 57 years.     Hmn, that's crazy I thought EZPass was nationwide!  I was initially resistant to the idea, but now so few of the toll booths around here have actual people in them, and the advent of high speed EZPass (go through at regular road speed) have made it a huge time saver. 

    Though downstate they are also using the plate recognition system Mark Z is talking about.  There actually is no place to deposit money on the off ramps.  I find this system to be kind of foolish from an expense to the state standpoint, unless linked to EZPass. 

    My advice would be to pick up an EZPass.  They are sold in the states that use the system it seems.  You can stop in to the toll complex (buildings in the middle of the highway, there should be signs) and purchase one I believe.  Just Google "EZPAss" and the state you're in and it will link you to the page for that state.

    Go online to the ezpass website. Click on, get my ezpass. It'll list the states that participate. Click on NY then, click on apply on line. It will ask you to select the state you reside in...click on your state. Follow the prompts to start an account. Once finished, they'll send your transponder for the  vehicle(s) you listed on your account. Done.

    I suggested begin with NY because it seemed to be the easiest to navigate online.

    I went thru this process recently because we travel thru Louisville and there are bridge tolls on I-65. You don't know that until it's too late plus, they are electronic tolls only so I was always getting a bill in the mail.

    Sad to say, but welcome to the east coast. Our last recent trip on the Ohio and Pa turnpike tolls were more then the gas bill.

    When we were in WA, and I got stuck on tolls and lanes, they gave the option of paying online up to 2 days after the fact.

    Make a 'va-kay' out of it and stay OFF the I-95 traffic/death trap and go secondary roads..........look at the scenery (EZ for me to see since I've never done it!)....Seems like a cool way to see 'Mer-cuh' through a windshield.....especially in  a classic.
