Let me get this straight..........

When adjusting the TV cable on an A/T if its too LOOSE.........that's when it shift slow and WILL burn up the tranny. Right?!
If its too tight....will it also burn it up?!  Tighter gives firmer and later shifts. Right?!

I'm assuming the situation in Ford automatics is similar to the GM ones I'm familiar with.  The whole idea of the TV cable is that the transmission can match shift firmness and shift point to engine output.  Therefore, when adjusted correctly the transmission operates as intended.  When not adjusted correctly the transmission operates out of its design parameters.  A slack cable will cause soft, slipping shifts that will burn up the trans eventually.  An overly tight cable will cause problems too, mostly harsh part throttle shifts, which can break stuff in the trans.

The TV cable is not there to alter shift points, messing with the TV cable could be big trouble without making sure the TV pressures are within the correct parameters.
An oil pressure  gauge has to be connected to the pressure tap on the right side of the transmission and adjusted in the 28-38 range with 33 psi being optimum.
 There is a proper way of doing this which I won't go into unless I have to, google the method if you are going to set up the tranny properly.
 As for you question Mike, tightening the cable will increase the TV pressure and slightly increase the shift point and firmness.

While the TV cable might not be there to raise shift points, it certainly did so when I tightened mine up ~3/16". Not a lot, just a few hundred rpm, but enough to notice.

Shift RPM needs to be set by changing the configuration of the governor.  It can be altered by adjusting the TV cable, but its not the correct way to do it.  Thinking that its okay because its not loose and prone to slip is simply not correct.  Damage can also occur from overly harsh shifts, which is what on over tightened TV cable produces. 

Shift firmness, likewise should be tailored in the valvebody, not by tightening the TV cable.

Ya, well... butt. Figured since I rebuilt this tranny, if she blows I'll rebuild it or put in one that takes a third pedal. If it matters, I also checked my pressure with a gauge.
