One piece rear main seal removal & installation

Here is how you get the seal out.
Punch two holes with a small sharp punch or 16d nail.
Insert two sheet metal screws.
Use nail puller to pry seal out.

KEEP THE SCREWS FROM SCRATCHING THE SEAL SURFACE ON THE CRANKSHAFT.
The seal will pop out without a great deal of force or drama. Pull straight out on the screws so they do not contact the crank.

Will post pics of my install tool next.

I found a 4” pvc cleanout cover that fit the 351w rear seal perfectly. The 5.0 seal is smaller diameter, but I bet there is something similar that will work.

If I was going to do this again, I would use three long studs screwed into the crank flange, protruding through three drilled holes in the pvc cover so the seal could be pushed into the block in a more controlled fashion. That comes after trashing the first seal I attempted to drive in place using the pvc tool.  It tore off a little section of the OD of the seal as it went in.  On the second attempt, I sanded a small radius on the bore where the seal fits, plus a paper thin layer of rtv on the OD of the seal, more as lubricant than as a sealer.

See, I TOLD YOU I didn’t learn all this crap by doing it right the first time.
