I got a new gas tank to replace the leaky one in my FB. Moisture held in the very front of the tank at the top created a few rust pinholes. Vapors moved to the rear of the tank along the ribs, making it seem like the leak was around the filler hose. Since the original sender is worn out, I need a new sender.
Can anyone recommend one that's not C-junk that is accurate and may last a few years? Can't seem to find a good one for 5/16" hose.

Got mine from Poop Boyz a few years back.....no negative issues. Although....they are kinda delicate so handle with care.

That is such a hard question to answer. I don't figure any of us has found one that is consistently reliable. One caveat is make sure to get Ford resistance value sender with Ford gauges.

^^^^^ on that.
Two two types of senders are out there, linear and non linear. Make sure you get the right one.
Ford senders are non, this is visible on the variation of the resistance wire spacing on the sender. The reason for this is the shape of the Mustangs fuel tank.
The linear sender has evenly spaced wire on the sender and will make the Mustang gauge read incorrectly.
The rsistance of the sender should read,
full about 10 ohms
3/4 is about 15 ohms
half is about 20 ohms
1/4 is about 40 ohms
empty is about 65-70 ohms.

One option, not related to quality. I think the 68 sender uses a 3/8” outlet tube instead of the normal 5/16” tube. You will have to check. I know the 69 has 3/8” but calibration is for the larger 20 gallon tank and will be incorrect in the 66 tank.
Quality is a crapshoot. I have bought most expensive with no better results than the cheapest.
Use grease to hold the o-ring in place when you assemble it into the tank. Keep your original lock ring. Much better than the junk ones that come with new tanks.

I have a 20 gallon tank in my 66. I have tried 3 different 20g pickups. From 3 different vendors. When all 3 show 1/4 of a tank, I can only get 10 gallons in. That's about right for the 16 gal tank. All 3 look identical. When I compared them against the old 16 gallon pickup, they matched exactly. So, be very careful and check that the new unit will give you the proper reading.
Someone here has put together a writeup on how to calibrate the pickup. Maybe he can resusitate it for this discussion.

Spectra EFI pump/sending unit is like what is found in new cars today.
I know it is at least consistent.
I have the 22 gallon version.
according to Tubo’s part number, he has 16 gallon.
Here is link for 1966 mustang 16 gallon :
,1966,mustang,4.7l+289cid+v8,1332885,fuel+&+air,fuel+pump+&+housing+assembly,10147
Just remember this is an in tank pump/sending unit assembly.
I went with entire tank/pump assembly since I was converting to EFI.
Tank does have a sump as well for fuel pump.
I haven’t seen a carb sending unit with the new technology yet.
Hope this helps.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
