How to narrow an 8.8 rear axle to fit yer Mustang

Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mayYpK_aPgM
Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNlW7TfZYQw

I wish I found this Years ago.
An Exploder rear narrowed this way fit's great in a 65-66 Mustang
For a 68-69 Stang use 8.8 from a Fox body, grind mounts as per video and weld on spring perches, No Narrowing needed

TuboIf it ain't broke, I haven't modified it Yet

Re: How to narrow an 8.8 rear axle to fit yer Mustang

That's exactly how I did mine four years ago...shoulda dun a video, I guess.  Except I didn't weld the tubes to the CC...non-racing application, didn't seem necessary.  I positioned my weld so the left side spring perch straddled it.  Had some alignment issues after welding on the spring perches so I made an alignment tool to straighten the tubes.  Seems to be working okay after 17K miles.

If anyone is interested I will loan the alignment tools for cost of shipping.

Great video and a great mod for our cars.

Hey Bob,   Does that tool help you align the perches on the axle tube?

No...it helps you to align the axle ends with the carrier bearings so there will be no bind on the axles/carrier bearings/axle bearings.  My axle tubes pulled off a bit when we welded on the spring perches so I made the tool to check alignment end to end and used heat/cool to pull the tube ends into alignment.
As I recall, I aligned the perches by getting the axle up-side-down on stands and with the pinion flange pointing down five or six degrees....six I think.  Then I positioned the perches on the axle tubes so they were dead level and tacked them in place.  That gave me the six degrees of up pinion angle that my setup seems to like.

Hey Steve, why is your son narrowing an explorer rearend for a 68?  I thought the 68 rearend was wider than the 65/66.  By narrowing the exploder rear like this you take out 2 7/8 inches and end up with an axle that is 1/2" narrower than a stock 65/66 axle.

No BB.  I think he;s going to weld the spring perches on and call it good.

Yup that's the way to do it
Unless your65-66 has modern wheels that require heavy back spacing, in which case the fox body 8.8 would be yer Huckleberry

So is he going to want to put the perches on exactly where there mounted on this 8" Axle?

Essentially Yes, perches same distance apart (as on 8") evenly spaced on the axle

For pinion angle you can do it the way I did...see my post above.
