Studs

There are 3 mounting points for the A/C box I am installing in the car. Two of them utilize OEM heater box mounting locations and the 3rd directs you to use a Tek screw into the cowl. No F'ing way am I going to drill a hole in my rust free cowl. I wanted to use a ClickBond stud kit but they run $30 for 4 studs. Off to the hardware store I went. I used J-B Weld to glue the 1/4-28 stud to the inside of the cowl.

Re: Studs

Good idea. If you ground the top of the bolt with coarse grinder and same on the cowl surface, there is a good chance it will stay!

I must assume you do not have a welder?  A piece of 3”x3” 14 ga steel with the bolt welded to it, then welded to the cowl would be a good permanent solution.  Would only take 3-4 little plug welds.  Those ac units don’t weigh much.  On the 66, I had to drill a 1/4” hole through the firewall for that bolt.

Re: Studs

I love using J-B for stuff like this.  Had my PCM hanging for years with a bracket J-B'd to the cowl.  Needed clips to hold my fuel tank vent line to the inside of the quarter panel....J-B to the rescue.
Good thinking, Gary.

Re: Studs

Actually, from talking with the body shop I use bonding panels instead of welding them is a good idea for a couple reasons.  First, it completely seals the two panels together.  Rust forms where metal overlaps because moisture can get in.  If its sealed moisture can't get in, so much less likely to rust.

Second, repairs can be more easily made.  Most bonding adhesives break down in the presence of heat, so you torch the area for a little bit and the parts just come apart.  No spot welds to drill out, limited grinding, etc.

Keep in mind the reflective tiles on the space shuttle are glued in place.  Good enough for NASA, good enough for me!

Re: Studs

I think the panel bonding stuff does not get as brittle as jb weld does and may be a possibly better choice.  Having alot of surface area glued like Gary did helps alot. Believe me, I have jb welded and rtv’d my good share of stuff together, too!

But I prefer the quick results of welding when I can make it work.
