Look at the gauge print Bolted posted. There is a 30 wire, Black w/green stripe. If I'm thinking correctly that feeds a switched 12 volts to the 5 volt voltage regulator. The 5 volt feeds that gauges. This should be OK to use, being switched your tach is not hot when the key is off. Keep in mind the 5 volt side is not actually 5 volts, it's a pulsed 12 volt that averages 5 volt.

Have you checked wire #30 that feeds power to the constant voltage unit in the drawing I posted?? That should give you a switched 12 volt lead.
Have you purchased one of these yet?? The drawings listed at the Average Joe's site do not show all of the wiring for the car.
