Been do'in the bash thrash and in the process I found one(1) of the holes in my waterpump has stripped out..Now......the pump is pretty old butt..it doesn't leak and the shaft seems to be good and tight. Tapping the bad thread is near impossible unless the radiator is pulled. IF I pull the radiator I might as well replace the durn pump!
The question is.........will three(3) bolts hold the pulley on securely enough to take a 10 hour drive to the bash?!
Important info...... there is NO fan involved with this equation! Just the pulley, and an alternator pulley and of course the crank pulley. I have the electric fan pulled so its out of the way....Its also 90+ degrees all weekend and 90+ humidity too.
I'm running out of dry t-shirtz!!
Wadda-ya'll thank?!

If anyone says "It'll be all right" and it breaks, then it becomes their fault. So, I'll say change the pump.

I would be concerned that the broken bolt might be one that insures the integrity of a water passage. If that is the case then long sustained use may cause that area to seperate enough to cause a significant leak????
Otherwize,IMHO, three out of four bolts would certainly hold the pump in place.

well Sal, If you want an easy and quick way to fix this, without pulling the water pump, and you are just using 4 bolts to hold the pulley in place on the mount, heres what I would probably do "in a pinch"
see if there is room to put a nut behind the the round mount that would NOT hit the pump housing with the pump turning. If there is enough clearance, put nuts on all 4 mounts. How you get them to stick is put them on with a little bit of silicone, put the bolts in without the pulley in place enough to hold the nuts and allow the silicone to dry. then afterwards, use bolts that are a Pinch longer that go through the pulley, the pulley mount...and the hex nut, but ARE NOT long enough to rub on the pump body.
If you are just holding on a pulley, your exsisting bolts are probably long enough. If not, maybe a 1/4 inch more. JUST MAKE SURE of the clearances.
Then you can replace your entire pump at your leisure.....when its cooler and you have more time.
The reasons I am saying this....is to me, its a balance issue. you cant run three bolts on a long road trip as its going to throw it off balance. you cant put 1 nut on the stripped one, same reason.
and YES I have seen one of those PRESSED on pump shaft fan mounts cracked before. It isnt a pretty sight when it cracks and the whole assembly gets slung under your hood.

i'd buy the waterpump and gasket and antifreeze, and put it in the trunk. we can always install it at the bash if necessary.

Dang it, sal... You drove all the way to Texas with just one (loose) bolt holding your steering wheel on. What the heck are you worried about with THREE holding on a little old pulley!!!?
Offline

sal,
was it stripped last year when you drove the car to tomball? If it was, you didn't have any problems then...............

I fell like three bolts are plenty to hold on a water pump pully, However , I would locktite or silicon the forth bolt for bal\ance.
Offline
I would go to the Bash as is and not give it a second thought.
I'm willing to take the heat if it fails and can be attributed to one missing bolt....
Edit: if you are worried about balance, take the bolt out thats across from the missing one....problem solved.
Double Edit : If you are worried about the two remaining bolts breaking, (I wouldn't be) replace them with Grade 8. Now its a permanent repair.

I agree with GregB about putting in a slightly longer bolt and a back-up nut. As for balance, well, I wouldn't worry about the weight of one 5/16 nut and a bit of longer bolt that close to the center. Most water pump hubs are driving steel fans that are usually balanced to the nearest ounce...or two, maybe.
You have two weeks, Sal. If you are nervous about the missing bolt, put in a new pump. It couldn't take more than a day.
See ya soon, Mike.

IMO, three will do fine! Balance issue? I doubt it as the diameter of the bolt pattern is only couple inches.

Sal, Do you have a set of taps? That screw is 5/16 - 24 IIRC. Try to "chase" the threads with a tap, it just may restore the threads enough to be usable - then be sure to use a new bolt.
If that doesn't work, would there be room for a 90 degree drill to drill the stripped hole?
Here's a 90 degree drill:
Next step is to borrow one (90 degree drill) from somebody. Then heli-coil the stripped thread.
Either fix is a Permanent fix, no worry about the "what ifs".
Good Luck

I second that. 3 bolts is probably plenty. But if you can get a bolt in there with some loctite or some jbweld or the like until you have the time to put in a new one.
