The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

After being shamed at the Waco Mini Bash by MS for not having the grille surround moldings installed, I  figgered I ought to install them before the Bash at the Beach was cancelled. I had ordered aftermarket fasteners months ago, but didn't realize the POS's didn't fit or have long enough threaded studs. Nice. Luckily I scored some nice used pieces from a buddy.

You people with pre 69 Mustangs have no idea how lucky y'all are you don't have these moldings to install. Fat old fingers, bad back, and bad attitude don't work so well in small areas. Little did I know the moldings are easier to install before the headlight doors are attached to the fenders.

Ya, I know, I've got some adjustments to make the hood line up to the headlight doors. The 69s are infamous for the front curve of the hood not matching the curve of the headlight door/ fender extension.

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

Your doing great Bob. Can’t tell you how many pieces on my car got installed more than once when I figured out that this would be easier to install if I’d remove this part and that part too!!!

No idea Charles if it was before or after, but I do know that was one of the funniest nights in a while.

Truth be told, the trim indeed needed to be installed, and I needed a kick in the rear to get going. Beside the install difficulties, the trim needed the clear coat?? or whatever coating removed. After stripping, I had to remove about 3 really good dents from the outer C moldings. I then applied a brushed finish.

I do believe a new nickname was invented in Wacko. It was quite the trip. Hey, I got thick skin

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

I have been blamed for asking if the trim was going to be installed or not. Jeesh.
But it does look a hell of alot better with it than without, but that is just my own opinion.

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

Steve, you are correct that you merely asked about the trim. The shame is my reaction, or guilt for not doing something I should've done ages ago. You are not being blamed by me for anything, other than getting me off the couch and doing something.

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

I lined up the trim on the hood.  I took a pencil and lightly marked on the trim where the holes were.  I lined the hardware on the on trim with my markings.  Then I RTV them on the trim and let it sit for 24 hours.  They the trim lined up with holes and then I installed the nuts.   Steve69

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

Thanks Steve. I thought of trying to just glue them on with some rtv or super duper adhesive. For lining up the studs I used a Sharpie, which I wouldn't have to worry about scratching and wipes off easily.

A MS-Approved fix!  RTV to the rescue.

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

If one were to look at the 1972 Highlands High School TARTAN school newspaper article about me running for class office, it was noted there that the 1969 Mustang was my all time favorite car.  Still is!  I have only owned ONE of them, that red T5 coupe.  So, technically, it really was not a Mustang... But I wish I still owned it.

Just cannot beat the look of a 69 Mustang.

Back about 5 years ago when I was installing a new hood I was getting really pissed off with the $14 chrome molding and hardware.  You told me to spend $80 for the good molding and RTV the brackets into place.  So you did help me with the RTV  and I did buy a better molding...LOL

Re: The Joy of Having a 69 Mustang

I bought my 70 with out that trim. I got an original one from the Ford house that came with all the hardware and a stiffener or support piece that went on the inside before the nuts. That piece of metal was to thick and I stripped out the sheet metal acorn nuts that came with it. You will see AN lock nuts on it and no support piece. Not original but it's on.

It looks good BBtoo
