OEM Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8

I have read that the 5.8 ECMs are not as good as the 5.0 units so I am wondering if I can take a 5.0 ECM and run it on my 5.8 as long as I upgrade the injectors to the correct size? I have "the book" haven't read it yet but I will.  If a 5.0 computer will work anyone have an extra one you would like to sell me ?

If it isn't broken...modify it anyway! http://www.DazeCars.com https://galaxieforum.boardhost.com

Re: OEM Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8

Thought you were using a Megasquirt Day? You can use a 5.0 ECU, but you'd need something to tune it. Moates Quarterhorse and software. Maybe an ECU from a Lightning??

Re: OEM Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8

Day, check out EfiDynotuning.com.  I'm pretty sure you can use a 5.0 HO ECU but I'm not sure if you can tweak the firing order and injector firing order.  You need to use an ECU with the J3 port so you can install the Moates.
I'm just now getting into this tuning thing and for me the learning curve is about verticle... but I think you can do what you need.  Go to that forum...post your questions...you'll get good answers from fairly friendly and very knowledgeable guys.

Re: OEM Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8

Yes, BUT be careful and match the ECU you are using to the year of the harness you are using.  The pin outs changed over the the years.  When they used to sell MAF conversion kits for the 1st gen Lightning they were the same kit as used on the SD 5.0 Mustangs.  5.0s and 5.8s have the same firing order, so the injector firing order is the same.  You will likely need to adjust the tables in the ECU for the additional size of the 5.8.  It will start and run on a regular 5.0 map, but it won't be ideal.  Along with BB I would suggest the Moates Quarter Horse for tuning along with EEC Analyzer and Binary Editor software pack.  Also, make sure you use a common ECU with a common strategy that has been cracked (the popular 5.0 ones all have been), otherwise its going to make more work for you getting it up and running.

Re: OEM Ford EFI 5.0 and 5.8

Daze,

As I recall, 5.8’s did not use sequential fuel injection at any time.
The non-HO 5.0’s...same thing.
The H.O. 5.0’s were the only ones to use sequential firing EFI. (Mustang and Lincoln Mark VII’s)
You can use stock mustang ecm even with big blocks and 19# injectors.
If you can’t find this online, send me your email.
I have it saved as a pdf.
This pdf has the necessary information for sensors and ecm.
