2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

What cables off late model vehicle (mustang, f150, or Kia) will slip in with least amount of fabricating?

My 65 has the one piece 66 with horseshoe adjuster.
Using stock E-Brake handle for now.
Want to order parts ASAP.
Thanks!
Dan

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

I'm planning to install similar brakes on the Heap, Dan.  Planning to use stock P-brake cables.  May have to do a little mod to make them connect.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

So make a tubular adapter to go between the caliper bracket and the cable.  I think MS is using stock cables and that's what I plan to do so there's gotta be a way.  Maybe he'll chime in.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

I used the MS Cobra cables with 2017 calipers. I fabricated fittings to attach them to the calipers. I used a 97 Escort floor mounted handle. See pics in how-to section.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

I recall something about using same cable sheaths.
You could cut off tunnel brackets to relocate further aft.
I don’t weld and don’t want to mess with that option right now.
If I could find long enough late model mustang/F150/Kia cable,
I might be able to use the cable and make a tube extension as suggested.

Having difficulty finding cable lengths. ( sheath and cable)
I believe Ford used this rectangular lasso on other vehicles as well.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

Original drum cables will not work with the 2015 or newer calipers.  I used the generic cable housings I sold at MustangSteve sold for Cobra conversions.   When I changed to 13” 2015-2020 GT rear brakes, I changed the inner wire only using some from RockAuto for a late model F150. The end that attaches to the caliper is unique, but one could fabricate an end that will work if you have a way to crimp it to the inner wire.

If using the 2005-20014 rear calipers, the original drum cables will work if a little bracket is fabricated abd welded to one of the axle u-bolts.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

When I pulled the MK VIII set up from the WY the original e-brake brackets were rusted out beyond recognition.
Going along with Steves suggestion  maybe you could come up with a bracket that will bolt to the existing hardware.
Here is how I did mine.

I used the original drum cables for the above pictured conversion. The MK VIII also has  a unique cable termination.    I cut the cable to the proper length and from the appropriate diameter round stock and made a cable end.
The trick to fastening the cable to the cable end is simple.
Drill the cable size hole in the cable end, then with a 1/8" larger drill bit go 1/4 way through the same hole.
Push the cable through the small hole of the fitting and fray the end of the cable to the size of larger diameter hole so it is flush with the diameter of the cable end. Using silver solder fill the frayed cable end and the hole in the cable end.
I have used this method to remake motorcycle cables and never had a termination failure. Factory made cables used to fail routinely because they used ordinary lead solder instead of silver solder.
 Hope this helps.

I have wondered if that same method would work by simply melting the end of the wire to a steel lug with my MIG welder.  Not having a suitable tensile tester, I have not been willing to test the cables in actual use.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

I am scratching my hair over all of this conversation.  I have '88 Lincoln Mark VIII disk brakes curtisy of SSBC in the rear of my car.  My '66 brake lines work perfectly.  I just hooked them up and they worked.  Now that was about 10 years ago when SSBC was still a viable company.  What has changed since then?

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

Well, that is the issue with making “ brakes that bolt right on” as opposed to using later model Mustang brakes that are more difficult to install, but utilize Ford parts. Try buying ANYTHING from SSBC now that they are out of business.

The difference is the way the parking brake levers are configured.  Not saying one is better than the other, as far as parking brake actuation, they are just different.

Re: 2016 rear discs—emergency brake cable-RESOLVED

Done.
Works great.
Thanks for inspiration Bill (BillyC).

97-02 Escort parking brake cables for drum brakes.
Some minor modifications required at caliper end (tack weld a washer).
Factory cable route used.
Custom front cable by Mustang Dan. 🤣

This setup could be used with a floor mounted hand brake as well.
97-02 Escort front cable will attach without modifications.
Front cable length could be modified to floor brake placement easily.

The loop is larger than needed at caliper.
Could place filler weld in rear 1/2 of loop.
I may do this later if needed.
The zip tie keeps loop from detachment during assembly and JIC.
Will use safety wire or stainless ties (like for header wrap) for long term.

2016 calipers with new rotors has about 1/4” travel to set brakes.

I included the 97-02 Escort front cable for floor mount applications.
Cable stop crimper borrowed from work was purchased at Tractor Supply.
Front cable, stops, and e-clips purchased at local hardware store...look for Hillman parts boxes.
