    power windows

    Anybody using the power windows kit by Nu-Relic ?

    any feedback this kit or others as for quality, ease of install etc. etc.

    I have A1-Electric kits.  Been in there almost 20 years now, working great.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

    Way back, A1-Electric was the only game in town. I recall when Nu-Relic appeared, that the general consensus was that Nu-Relic was better. I decided then that if I went electric windows, I'd use Nu-Relic. Still haven't, so I don't have any real experience with either.

    Yes, I instaled Nu-Relic power on all four windows of our 66 HT in '15 and other than they seem just a tad slow I'm very happy with them.  I also installed the lever switches and love them.  I was going to make the lever switches but in the end just stepped up for the factory made ones.  They seem to be a good, solid unit and I'm glad I didn't try to home-brew them.
    If you go with the lever switches you will also want to install at least one switch to control the front passenger window.  Reaching across the car when you need to open that window is getting to be a PIA so that will be a project some day.
    Time doesn't mean too much on these cars as far as part durability is concerned but so far since the install we have nearly 17K miles on the car and fifteen or so car shows so the windows do get used.

    I'm also electing to add a one touch up/down module.  It will be hidden back with the relays and give true modern car convenience to the power window setup.

    Do those work with a two-stage switch or is it a "time on" thing?  Would be a nice upgrade but will it work with the lever switches?  Seems that the ones in my F150 use a two stage switch.

    BB, I'm also using the lever switches too so you should be good to go.  I drew a wiring diagram...let me see if I can find it..

    Mine are Dakota digital switches that are lit at night, each one operates on low current to separate  up and down relays for each window. Picture below.
     I used heavy gauge wire to and from the relay to the window motors to eliminate voltage drop.
     The schematic below shows the wiring from the actuator switches to the relays, not shown are the circuit breakers to B+

     Just thought I'd mention that lever switches need to be DPDT self centering to work in the power window application.

    I have looked long and hard for switches that would look like they are at home in a 65/66 console.  Still haven't seen anything better than the Cordoba switches.  Maybe really old Ford switches.  All those are made out of unobtanuim anymore.   I did find some gm switches that seem like they would be ok. I think they were mid 70s chrome.    Some pictures would be nice on others solving the problem. 

    Years ago I made a power window regulator out of a manual regulator and Bosch power motor, but in the end, I just bought the A-1 units.  Mustang Steve was with about removing that lever arm.  It's just not worth it.  The engineering is better.

    If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

    They do because they are.  This is what GM power window switches of the era looked like. I'm stepping out of the room into which I just tossed a live grenade sans pin and spoon...

    I have a pair of A1-Electric front door power window for for 65-66 that I never got around to installing in my 66 before I sold it I would sell for $200.00 shipped in the lower 48 states if anyone is interested.

    I have the Nu-Relics in mine and they work well. Came with good instructions and were fairly simple to install. I opted for black push button switches and mounted them in the console. The wiring came well protected from them with some sort of woven covering. The back windows got routed through the door channels to the front, up into the dash, then down under the carpet on the transmission tunnel. The right side wire was long enough. The driver side required lengthening about 2-3 feet. I connected them to my aux fuse block and routed power through a relay so they need the key on to operate.

    I like the idea of relays for the up/down part, but I didn’t have time when I installed them..... was in Bash thrash mode.

    That’s a cup holder from Amazon that we cup the bottom of the from compartment out of. Sheryl fitted the switches and used a soldiering iron to melt the plastic back together to hold it in place. I use the dash trim Medallions to cover the holes from the old window cranks.

    I kind of like this but this price is a bit prohibative.  Those look like late 60s / mix 70s gm switches.

    I think there are the switches BB is talking about.  They turn a window crank handle into a switch. You just click it up or down to activate the system.  Kind of spendy, but I like them because they solve the window switch appearance issue.  It looks stock, but has power windows.  The only thing you have to locate is the switch allowing the LH one to operate both windows.
