Hello all, robby13 here. Was repairing and replacing the upper collars on the steering column, also had to change the upper bearing on the 68 , 289 coupe. The old bearing came out no problem, got a new one, put it in, and it was tight. Used a bicycle seat tube to seat it. Now I can't get it out. I finally got a very good upper collar to replace my damaged one. The 68 is not like the 67 where you can slide the lower collar all the way down. Any ideas on how to get it off? Thanx.

Try to ice the shaft only to shrink the shaft just enough to lift the bearing off, isolate the bearing....jj

Any other options short of destroying the new bearing? The ice just melted all over. It's hot up here finally. The lower sleeve is actually a part of the structure when slid down, I had to tap it forward with a hammer to get it off, without the bearing in it.the old bearing came out fine, should have just repacked it and done!

Remove the 2 7/16 nuts holding the upper housing and the snap ring and pull the housing off

Not that easy, the bearing has to come off first before the housings will come off. I had to use a small bearing puller to get it off, finally did. Now, about those 2 nuts, what exactly do they do? The 2 black screws hold the housings together, the rear housing is kind of part of the steering tube. The little bolt heads seem to just sit in their little square recesses and do nothing. There are 2 square cut outs on the tube right behind little bolt heads. What am I missing? This is on the 68 non tilt. Thanx.

Take the nuts completely off, they hold the housing to the tube, they grab cutouts in the tube

Welcome to the forum. Typically you will get better responses starting your own thread than jumping on to another member's.
As for the parts you need, are they shown on this diagram? If so, what number are they?
