DFW Machine Shop and 4r70W Trans Shop

Howdy. New guy who is actually an old guy recycled here. It's been so long that I ended up reregistering.

I'm about to dive back into rehabbing my old 71 convertible.  I'll be looking for things like machine shops and 4R70W help in the Dallas Ft Worth area familiar with stroker work (on a  351C)  so if you have anything on those, please let me know. I'm in the Grapevine area so closer is better, but quality wins over distance.

She's in rough shape after sitting still for a long, long time, but we have begun. My son and I pulled the engine and FMX trans out last weekend and will be tearing down tonight. Assuming block checks out, we plan a mild stroke and the addition of aluminum heads.  I have a rusty set of Australian 2V, but I've decided to make the leap into the 20th century (maybe not the 21st).

Thanks for any help and tips along the way.

Re: DFW Machine Shop and 4r70W Trans Shop

4R70W's are readily worked on in just about any trans shop. Take yer choice
Do you already have a core?? if not, Source from 99-04 V6 Mustang. If you get the tranny grab all of the cable shifter mechanism, too

If it ain't broke, I haven't modified it Yet

98 is also a good year - that is the first year they did a few internal upgrades to strengthen the trans. You can also get them from Ranger with a 4.2L - that will also bolt up to a SBF.

Thanks. Yes, I have a core, but have had it so long that I don't recall what it came out of. It will definitely need rebuilding and a little improvement.

Yep like 6sally6 said.. I am building my 347 stroker right now, and last year built myself an AOD with 4R70W internals.

I have to say, if you have the time and interest, build it yourself , slow and steady and it will be rewarding.

If not, i recommend Mike's Economy Tranmissions in Mckinney  with full confidence. I live in Mckinney and these guys are great on prices, and amazing with their work. Nthing but good reviews from people who aren't looking for couches, and TV's and free drinks in waiting rooms HAHA.. but actual work!

As far as a machine shop for building or machining your block.. if you are looking for one.. I researched to death the cheap, the expensive.. Overwhelmingly , the recommendation was Wayne Calvert's machine shop in denton. I used his services, and they were AMAZING!! Wayne's son is the one who deals with people, and does some of the work, and wayne himself, a bit cranky :D but an amazing machinist does all the critical stuff. I called them almost every other day with questions, before I had given them any work and after, and never were theu too frustrated or too busy to answer anything .

If you plan to do your trans yourself (which is easier than it is made out to be with the right tools), I would love to help with anything I learned on my build.

I PM'ed you my phone number .. more than welcome to call or text!

Re: DFW Machine Shop and 4r70W Trans Shop

@6Sally6 Thanks.

@GABA  Thanks very much for the info and the kind offer.  While I do intend to build the motor, I hadn't even considered rebuilding the transmission myself. I'll have to think about that one.  I did put eyes back on the one I've had sitting out back for 6-7 years and see I wasn't careful enough in buying it. Didn't turn it over to check year yet, but I see it is for a 3 hole starter.

Thanks again for the offer of your knowledge and time. I don't take that lightly.

Pulling cam, pistons and crank out of the engine tonight. Found an unexpected rough edged hole in the lifter valley going back towards the distributor shaft so that gives me some concern about the block, but I planned to have it inspected before deciding whether to use it again or not.
