Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking.

With the bash canceled the bash thrash on the mustang did a rabbit hole maneuver. Yesterday I decided that today was they day to fire the engine and such for the first time since my Patented Oil Slinger fiasco. First I had to figure out why the turn signals and 4-ways would not work because if I fire the engine, we gonna drive.

I had installed relays for the tail lights after the Fort Walton Beach trip. The load on the brake light and turn signal switches was just too much for the switches as I have 3 1157 bulbs on each side. The relays fixed the problem and all was well, until recently. No flashers, no turn signals but the brake lights worked. Then it dawned on me that installing relays for the lights was similar to installing LED lights; not enough amp draw to make the flasher work. Why did it work before and not now? I checked everything and found the running lights on the front did not work either. It turns out that when I installed relays for the headlights I forgot to plug the running lights back in hence the front turn signals would not work and they seem to be enough load to run the flashers. Of course I had to pull the grill to get to the plugs. What a pain.

Today was fire up the engine day. It would not start. No amount of coaxing would make it go. I could prime the carb with gas and it would run till gas was gone. I pulled the line from the fuel pump to the carb and found it dry. Damn, did I forget to put the eccentric on the cam? Did the pump die after all these years. In not one of my brightest moments I had installed a fuel filter between the tank and the pump. I pulled the filter and then the pump would pump. The engine liked that a lot better.

First drive of the year was a non event once I got the lights fixed and the fuel pump doing its job.

The mustang is such a joy to drive.

Re: Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking.

Great news, seems you've solved the problems and are moving (pun intended) forward, good luck.

Good for you Gary. And I'm pretty sure we've all done some brain dead things with our cars. Misery loves company.

Re: Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking.

Thanks Gary😂
Glad you got it running...and learned sumthin’.

At least ya didn’t kill the engine by pulling the coil wire.
Yeah... I did that on my 84 Cougar many years ago after installing new plugs, cap, rotor, and wires.
I was tired and wasn’t thinking.
I learned sumthin’ too.

I don't claim to be brightest bulb in the box but why would that make a difference? That's where mine has been since I bought the car in the old days. Originally my fuel line from the pump to the carb screwed in at both ends until I modified it for the Eddy. It wasn't fitted for a filter. Do you think maybe your filter was plugged or installed backwards? Did you reinstall it before you drove it?  I'm doing the bash thrash too even though it's going to be just down the road a short piece.

Doug. I have always had a filter between the pump and carb. One of those all metal inline ones from Wix. In my infinite wisdom I decided to move the filter to the short piece of rubber line that connects the fuel line from the tank to the pump. I installed a new filter in the correct direction.
I think the volume of the empty filter nullified the pitiful sucking action of the fuel pump. The front end of the car was still on jack stands and the tank had about 3 gallons of fuel which may have exacerbated the problem. First thing after purging the cooling system and checking for leaks I drove around the block. Checked for leaks again and then headed to the gas station for 14 gallons of fuel.

Re: Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking.

Isn’t it a great feeling to drive it once some pesky issues are cured?
