I swear I've seen this thing installed half the time between the back plate and the water pump and the other half between the back plate and the timing cover. Which way does it go? It's almost like you need two gaskets here. Does this thing need rtv?Pic1

Two gaskets needed and they are not the same. One goes between the pump and the backing plate just like you have. The other goes between the pump and the timing cover. RTV is generally not needed but a thin film never hurts specially around the water ports.

Does it fit the water pump?....paying close attention to the ports on both side.
I wouldn't know because I don't use'm. Clean well and squirt on the blue RTV.
"You know the little area/compartment on top of the pump that seems to always have a little puddle of coolant collected in it?! Usually on the driverside just below the distributor......know where I'm talk'in about?" I don't have that....because of the RTV sealant. Ask yourself...."self. How many times are you gonna be changing out the water pump?? 10 years....MORE?
When you DO need to replace the pump, just use a thin putty knife and a hammer and your golden! Small price for no-leak city!

You can also use a thin coat of Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket #3 on the gaskets and surfaces. This creates a seal as good as RTV, but does not fully harden. I've managed to fix small leaks caused by fasteners loosening just by tightening the fasteners back down. If you need to remove it all you need is a rag and some solvent (BrakeKleen, lacquer thinner, whatever). Its a great thread sealant too. Its not effected by oil or coolant. Its resistant to gas and Diesel fuel too.

What?? This is for a 5.0 Small Block windsor. Should be the same water pump from 79-93. I haven't see anything regarding 2 gaskets needed.

There is a gasket between the backing plate and the pump, and one between the pump and the timing cover.

You asked if two gaskets were needed and I confirmed that two gaskets were needed.

When you buy a new water pump, it comes with the gasket installed between the plate and pump. But, it has no sealer on it. It should have sealer applied right before installing the pump to the timing cover.
I typically do not trust "only RTV" in a situation where the gasket retains pressure, such as a water passage, but, if it is working for 6sally6, apparently it works. I personally prefer to use the gaskets with a paper thin layer of RTV on both sides. Paper thin means just enough that the gasket appears wet.

In the 70’s I was playing with real airplanes and used Permatex Aviation Form-a-gasket to rebuild a couple of small Lycoming’s and a Continentalj C85-8 power plants for exp planes.
I still have a tube of it and after 40 some odd years is 100% usable.
I used it extensively on the two SB Ford engines I rebuilt many years after.
Being that old and usable speaks well for the quality of the product.

yes I still use permatex aviation, never failed me. i do use RTV sometimes though.

Make sure the bolts are tight on the back of he water pump don’t assume they are right on a new pump you will have to take it off again to tighten them if it leaks lol never done it but heard it happens praying all is well

Good point. Usually the pumps ship with those two bolts just finger tight. I guess they assume you are going to remove the cover, put some kind of sealer on the gasket and reinstall them.

Keyrap, I learned this the hard way just recently. I thought I had checked them but I guess I did not and had to pull it apart and put new gaskets in plus a little rtv here and there.
