Had a Ford I6 once that would start, run, then mysteriously die.  Let it cool down and it would fire right back up and run good until it died again.  It was the pin.  I guess when it got hot it expanded enough to let the gear move past the place it should have been and shut off the engine.  Once it cooled down it caught in the right spot and ran until it heated back up again.  Gave us fits trying to figure it out.  I didn't suggest the pin because if the gear moves its going to effect the timing as well as not driving the oil pump, but as I've seen weird things sometimes happen.  Probably also worth a look see.
