Should there be a lock washer

Between the nut and steering wheel?

Re: Should there be a lock washer

I do not believe there is. I have pulled many steering wheels and none had any type of lock washer.

Re: Should there be a lock washer

Seems Ike the nut is tight but a slight bit of play when I pull the wheel back towards me.  I thought maybe I ran out of threads.

Re: Should there be a lock washer

Never seen anything under a nut for a steering wheel.

Sounds like the bearings for steering shaft has some play. (Orange highlights)
You may be able to adjust it.
I tried to listen to my dad’s advice, mine was ok so I left it alone.

Did your column shift downward?

I have one piece input.

Rag joint maybe?

Re: Should there be a lock washer

It's a special lock nut that has indents on three sides for interference. They tend to get loose after they have been removed  many times.
If you can get it all the way on with very little torque replace it or center punch the dimples to make it right.

Re: Should there be a lock washer

'69 should have a rag joint, right?  That's probably where your play is.
