Ive changed out the drum brakes for discbrakes(3 weeks ago) and noticed that the axle has the ventilation plugged ? should it not have a breather cap or filter on it ? The hose coming from the axle is plugged just at the fitting. Can I put a piece of hose with a filter on top ?
The bearings are one piece, small version. How do they get lubricated ? Does the oil in the shaft reach and lubricates the bearings ? When I pulled out the shafts there was oil/fluid on them but not that much .There were no grease on the bearings . Should I squeeze in grease ? It just struck me yesterday :-)

The axle should have the vent. Mine has a hose routed up to the body and get stuffed inside a small hole in the cross brace for the upper shock mounts. It’s a void area so no need for a filter. If you want to add a filter, I don’t see how it could hurt.
The axle shaft bearings should be sealed so they don’t need the oil from the rear end. There should be a seal just inside the tube that prevents most of the gear oil from making it over to the bearing also.

If you look in the area Bolted noted you may find an unused hole, or even the remains of a plastic clip used to secure the breather hose. The breather is just a one way valve commonly available. Fox cars just had the breather right on the axle tube with no hose.

Had another thought about the bearings...... from your description, I made the presumption of an 8" or 9".Is that correct? If the bearing is pressed on the axle shaft, then all should be good with my comments.

True, the 8.8 uses an open bearing design with a an axle seal. Th bearings are lubed by the fluid in the rear unlike the 8"/9" design.

Yes ford 9 inch with 28 splines. The bearing are pressed on, Il change them next week. The hose was cut of and there was a lot of debris in the ventilation tube. I cleaned Everything and put on a bit of hose so Everything is fine :-)
