    A/C Compressor

    '67 Coupe, used to have factory air. About 8 years ago I installed the Old Air Products heat & A/C system. Works great. Recently the compressor area (Sanden Compressor) started squealing when I turned the air on. So I installed a new belt and made sure it was tight. Better but still squealed with the air on. A friend told me to spray some WD40 on the belt and sprocket. Worked great - for about 3 days and then the squealing was back. Any suggestions as to what the issue is and what I can do about it? Thanks for any help

    You might need a new belt if the one you have is glazed. I like touse Goodyear Gatorback brand.

    Yep!!! I always "heard".....once they start squealing only fix is a new belt!   (Kinda like in a marriage)

    How is the belt tensioned? Well, put a crow bar against the idler (?) which I had loosened to install the new belt and had a neighbor lean on the bar while I tightened the bolts. Very scientific. The belt feels tight. The new belt is a Gates Green Stripe that I bought at O'reilly. I think that was the same as was previously on the car. The old one lasted about 8 years before the squealing started.

    Same problem, new symptoms. When I start the engine - A/C on - I get the squealing. It lasts about 15-20 seconds then stops and does not squeal again. If I turn off the engine and immediately start it again the squealing begins and lasts 15-20 seconds, etc. Any thoughts?

    I almost always turn my AC off when I stop the engine.
    When starting I crank engine THEN switch on AC.
    Saves the battery saves the starter....several reasons. MIGHT save the life of the belt?!
    On my parts chaser (Mustang is old skool .....don't need no stink'in AC..........its a Hot Rod!)

    I added Vintage AC last year and went with a 5.0 serpentine belt system.  When my compressor kicks on I get a humming noise.  And when the car is sitting and I turn the wheel I get a slight groan when turning the wheel.  When the AC is off I dont get the noise.  So I think I have a little bit of belt slip too.  I did go with a smaller tighter belt too.

    Are you sure it's the belt? What about the alternator? What about the A/C clutch or idler pulley bearings? What about the depth of the belt in the pulley groove? It should only touch on the sides, not the bottom.

    Most serpentine systems use an automatic tensioner so the belt is under the correct amount of tension.  Too loose is bad, but too tight can be just as bad.

    The pulleys can also get glaze on them.  I'd go over all of them with a wire brush.

    Did you check the tensioner pulley and any idler pulleys for slop?  The noise could be a bearing, and those are usually the first to go, but it could also be a bearing in one of the accessories (alternator, compressor, etc.)
