To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

Would love to see pix. I have several possible locations in mind but figured why reinvent the wheel.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

Way back when I was younger and dumber, my engine bays looked like swiss cheese from all the holes I drilled. I try hard to minimise extra holes now. This location was dictated by the harness that BB built, but I would'a chosen the same place. Welded to a bracket that bolts to the spring shield bolts.

Not a TFI coil but here is where my HE coil lives.

Barry, where did that bracket come from that holding your power steering hoses together? I like that.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

John, I bought a pack of 9/16, cos I needed 2 for my -6 AN fuel lines. I had to open the last one up a bit to fit the PS hoses. The 5/8 size would have been a better choice, but I had one leftover .... also didn't wanna wait for my next trip to the States.
Original plan was to make a bracket, and mount with a longer bolt and extra nut .... but it didn't need a bracket.
I would'a bought'em from Summit or Jegs, can't remember.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

I'll say that in stock applications the Fox cars mounted the coil on the LH inner fender and had a long coil wire.  The SN95 cars moved it to the engine and used a short coil wire.  I've never gotten a definitive answer as to why this was done.  My suspicion is that it had to do with the spark scatter condition Fox cars used to exhibit when you would get ignition breakup above 3,000RPM, which was especially pronounced once you started modifying the car to improve breathing.  I think Ford thought that a shorter wire (less resistance) would help alleviate it.  It was really caused by not enough dwell in the TFI module.  I completely cured it on every Fox car I ever worked on with a better TFI module.  An MSD box would also work, but the module was considerably cheaper.  Holley actually used to make the best ones IMO under the Annihilator line

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

I probably don't have anything much to add here, but one thing I have discovered with coils is that they seem to perform best when they are mounted away from a heat source.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

I looked at the following for my install:

Heat sources
Clutter on fender
Stock plug wire length
Air flow for cooling

Engine and headers are aft of coil
P/s pump is below with aluminum bracket to shield
A/c compressor is above it so heat rises
Finally, electric cooling fan moves air across constantly as well.

The only thing in front of coil is the belt and on radiator support coolant overflow.

I made a bracket to mount it out of heavier gauge sheet metal that uses all four mounting points on coil.

That was what I didn't like about the placement of the SN95 coil.  But I'd also wonder, once you close that hood whether the inner fenders are any cooler than the engine.  Also, coils on every classic I can think of were mounted to the engine.  New engines also always have the coils mounted to the valvecover or directly above the spark plug.  Without real world temperature testing I think its hard to say.  I may try some readings with my IR thermometer at some point to see if I can get a better answer.

Let’s get anal and mount it on a Peltier module and location doesn’t matter.

I attached mine to my Monte Carlo bar using two 1" insulated clamps and two 10-32 screws and nuts.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

I learned something today Rudi. I had to look it up.
I’m sure I’ve seen it in some of our electronics recently.
Now I can share my new knowledge with the guys at work.😁

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

This is the technology that they probably use for heated and cooled seats.

Re: To anyone running a TFI coil, where did you mount it?

Thanks for all the feedback.  The 351W came with a bracket that mounted the coil to the top of the lower intake on the drivers side.  That was no longer an option because I am now using the 5.0 upper and that is why I started this thread.  After looking at what you guys had done and what I had to work with I ended up taking the OEM 5.8 TFI bracket and modifying it to mount in front of the head.  There is enough air around it that it shouldn't get heat soaked (any worse than any other place under the hood) and the bracket is solid enough to minimize vibration other than normal engine vibration.  I am happy with how it turned out.
