AOD, 4RW75, 6R80, 10R80 transmissions

Hey guys,

Looking to see what options are available to swap in an updated Transmission for a 66 Coupe.  Has anyone swapped in a newer 4RW75, 6R80 or 10R80 trans?  do you know if you had to modify the trans tunnel for clearances?

Currently the engine I have is a 302 from a 93 Thunderbird.  I'm 80% sure the 4RW trans will bolt up directly, but what about the 6R80 and 10R80 ones?

Comments opinions options are welcomed.  I'm just wondering if I'm better off getting an AOD or C4 and Rebuild one of those, or go down the path of a more modern trans.

Check out the Revology cars. Looks like they needed major tunnel surgery.

Skip all the hassle and just use an AOD.  No controller needed, all mechanical, still a 4 speed OD.

I swapped in a 4r70w in a Mach 1 73. I will never go back to FMX :-) , some fabrication but pretty straight forward.

Re: AOD, 4RW75, 6R80, 10R80 transmissions

I gotta agree with TKOP on the AOD, it’s a very basic, good performing  swap for a street driven car.
The best set up for an AOD is one that has upgraded internals as per Bumanns recommendations with a Silverfox or Lentech valve body.
If you go the AOD or any other route, research each one to the “nth” degree and then make a plan and follow it.
There is a lot of past info here as well as other Mustang web sites on auto tranny upgrades all you gotta do is search for them.
