How do i tell if my 1965 manual steering box is worn out?
Offline
My guess is if you're asking, you could probably use a rebuilt box from Chockostang. The three I've torn down had chunks of hard 50+ year old grease, no grease, rusted, or a combination thereof.
If you turn the steering wheel and the pittman arm doesn't move, you've got play that is a result of wear that can't be adjusted out.

Check the box to see if it still has the metal tag on it. If so, it's more than likely been there for 55 years, and could benefit from a rebuild. I pulled the box from my 65 and the date code came out to 1962. Someone put an older box in the car. Chockostang rebuilt that box and it was a couple hundred bucks well spent. I would recommend you doing the same, if you are inclined to stay original, versus going to R&P or the Borgeson. The rebuild took the play and wander out of my 65. I had replaced the tie rods and ball joints a couple years earlier.

I had a completely different story!!
Bob C (a Mustang Steve regular on here) suggested I try putting grease in my steering box. It had a fair amount of play and I figgered it was rebuild/replace time. I mean..........what could it hurt, right?! A little grease...ehhh!
A full tube later I replaced the plug and went for a drive. What a difference.....No slack...no play...felt just like it coulda 50+ years earlier!!
A real happy ending!!
Greezer 'up first just to see if it helps it.
