Some of you may know that I have been fighting under hood heat and fried my PS pump on the way back from my Montana trip. It got so hot it was smoking when I checked the fluid level out on the hwy. So I decided to install a PS cooler. I also rerouted the new lines up and away from the exhaust. I didn't want to go in front of the radiator because I knew it would just add to my heat issues that I have somewhat in control. So i opt for a remote location above the DS forward control rod just below and behind the radiator.
I bought a 5" x 5" cooler and added a 5" fan in Pusher mode with a thermostat that I had so I should be able to keep it around 180. I can go for a 15 minute drive and be at 210 and it will keep going up.
Maybe I over engineered this one but we will see.

Just a update, same trip with the cooler installed and stat set for about 190. the fluid is holding at 190 going throughout the inside of the pump now. I have a hunch that the fan may run a lot? we will see how it does on the next hot day when my under hood temps go up. Sure am glad to get the hoses away from the exhaust manifolds too.

Shouldn't the Power Steering fluid flow through the valve unrestricted when going straight down the road? I'm wondering if something else is going on.

I was surprised at how much heat a P/S pump generates. I had a noticeable under hood temp drop after I removed the pump and related parts.
Yes Chris, you are correct, the fluid should flow through the power steering valve unrestricted when in the neutral position.

So straight line driving we shouldn't make heat. that would explain how i got home then from Montana

My theory is there is no such thing as straight driving. With a crown in the road, wind and corners I'd think the steering wheel is never in the center except for a very short moment.

Update, Lucas Oil said cooler fluid temps are always better but 250 should be the max.
