Alternator

'67 Mustang, 302. It seems that I need a new alternator. I notice that some are 70 amp and others 100 amp with the 100 amp generally more expensive. Is it worth paying the additional cost?
I purchased the current alternator several years ago. It is a chrome 100 amp unit. There is a local shop here that rebuilds starters, alternators, etc. Should I just get mine rebuilt?
I appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Alternator

Rebuild kits are available. I have have done quite a few of them.
Usually it’s the diodes that go in them and are simple to replace as well as cleaning up the slip rings.
Or if you don’t feel confident, get it rebuilt to keep the chrome case.

Re: Alternator

I'm an idiot! When I removed the alternator I cleverly wrote down which wires connect where. Good planning. I normally only think of that after I have taken everything apart. Well, I managed to lose my note. Have I ever mentioned that getting old sucks? Anyway, I'm able to figure out the power (BATT) wire and the ground (GND) wire but I still have 3 wires left - a yellow, a black with a red stripe and a black with a tan stripe. There are 3 remaining connections on the back of the alternator - STA (starter?) at the 10 o'clock position, FLD near the center and an unmarked connection near the 6 o'clock position. I suspect that the yellow connects to the STA. If so, I have 2 wires left. Can anyone help? I should also mention that the wiring on my car often does not agree with the color code on my wiring diagram. Another project for the future. Thanx for any assistance!

Re: Alternator

All I know is......STA ain't starter!
I think its STATOR.
I know I'm not much help......S'why I went with single wire Alt. (less "stuff"to try to remember)
I don't recommend  the old-fashion 'smoke-testing'!
From what I know those alternators are FULL of smoke so don't let ANY out!!

Re: Alternator

Disregard all previous. I just noticed that I can get an alternator wiring harness from CJ and probably others so that is my new plan. Problem solved.

Yes, it is stator, and don't ground that terminal or the alternator won't charge.  It was used to drive the tach on some models, odd as that is.
