I thought I was well on my way,But the mustang gremlins have me.Recently did away with the electric pump and back to mechanical pump.Problem car started fine fuel pressure about five psig,Ran about five minutes lost pressure. Test for vacuum on pump had none.removed pump arm looks ok bench test pump ok pulled about 12inches vacuum probaly would go more.I then removed timing cover exceentric ok tight and not slipping,It is a one piece unit,Timming cover is a ford part pump is eldelbrock. Any ideas? I need spell check.

Clogged fuel line between tank and pump. Disconnect both ends and blow compressed air through it. Replace any rubber segments of the line. Replace fuel filter.
If that doesn't work, check the sock in the fuel tank.

I agree w/MS, clogged or partially clogged fuel line. I say 'partially' as it seems some gas was getting through, but not enough to sustain the running engine.

I thought about that but tank, pick up and lines are new filter also,I do not get a vacuum from the pump when on the motor.Every thing is tight pump to cover etc. I removed the cover all looks good .One would tend to think bad pump but it will produce a vacuum on bench.I will recheck lines.

Could the pump be binding when bolted up? Maybe back the bolts out a few turns and crank it to see if you get vacuum then. At least you might see if wiggle up and down indicating that the arm is making contact with the eccentric.

The eccentric may not be moving the lever as far as you are moving it on the bench. Get a new pump.
I like the CARTER pumps like the BOSS 302 used. If under 400HP, the $15 pump from OReilly Auto Parts works flawlessly and lasts a long time.

I now have part of the mystery solved,After a loss of fuel flow and checking pump vacuum,The vacuum on crank showed no vacuum,So I removed timing cover all looked good.I made a catch jar and hooked a AC vac pump with an old gauge I pulled 29inches of vacuum and no fuel and I would hold the vacuum if blanked off.Note this is all new lines filter tank and pick up. I was carefull to keep all clean.Blew pressure back line it opened now have flow.So I probaly blew the sock of of the pick up but more of a mstrey what blocked it? At least I got to look at chain and gears and put a new cover on it. Now on to see if pump works. And later remove pick up.
KM,
Use a clean one gallon container with about half a gallon of gasoline in it, run a piece of fuel line into the gasoline and then to the fuel pump. Crank the motor. If it runs, there is a problem in the fuel lines, tank or gas cap. If the motor does not run, fuel pump is most likely bad. Take all precautions not to start a fire.
Good Luck,
Pablo
