65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

JBA 1653SJS shorty headers $800 for the 351 swap into a 65 i read a write up on this to run 66 motor mounts and 66 motor mount brackets to space engine up some and these fit real good and dont burn up the spark plug wires. has anyone run these that can confirm they are good. Any tips on 351 in a 65 mustang tips would be appreciated thanks!

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

Are those the ones designed for cable clutch?  If so, that is what I have in my 66 with a 351w based 427 stroker.

Great bolt access and spark plug access.  I could not be happier with anything else.

They also sell a matching H-pipe for those headers.  I bought it but had to modify it to fit with my relocated crossmember for the TKO600.  Not sure I would buy the h-pipe again. .

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

I had a set of the 1653JS on my 66.  When I bought them in 2006 the flange was machined incorrectly so the bolt holes didn't line up with the heads.  It took a lot of whining and a little yelling but they finally figured it out and fixed it.

That aside, they fit OK in the car - no issues with the spark plug wires.  The left side is very close to the steering box in mine and over time the heat boiled all the grease out of it.  If you get them I'd definitely put a heat shield around the steering box.  They don't work well with the cable clutch either.  I never found a way to route the cable so that it did not melt.  I had several layers of insulation wrapped around my cable and a heat shield in place and it still eventually melted inside.  If you aren't running the cable clutch you obviously won't have that issue.

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

I just have a 289 in my '67, but I also have JBA headers and if the 351 headers are designed similarly you will need to do some tube recontouring via hammer if you plan to run a Borgeson power steering system.  Based on the comment about proximity to the factory box I would think you will have this issue with a Borgeson box, as its a good deal bigger than the stocker.

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

TKO is dead on,
I have 5.0 block in my 68 with JBA’s and just recently installed the Borgeson steering box, and the third tube back #7 hits bad, I did quite a bit of percussion engineering to get it in. Now that it’s in and everything works, I’m going to pull the header back off and reroute that tube. No one can see what I did to with a hammer but it bothers me.
Nice think about the JBA’s is I can pull that header in about 45 minutes.
These have been on the car for 8 years with zero leaks, and are no where close to the clutch cable, going from long tubes to mid length for a street car was the best thing I ever did.

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

I don't know about the installation of those headers in a 65 with a 351 (W?) but they fit great in my 68. No clearance or temp issues anywhere, and I also am running a Borgeson steering box. That may be because the 68 has a bigger (2") engine bay than a 65. The only issue I had on installation was that I had to cut off a 1/2" machined protrusion on the block that was interfering with the #5 cylinder tube.

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

My car has TCP rack in it, so no steering box interference was noted.

Re: 65 mustang 351 swap jba shorty headers

I see some guys are good with a 68' with 351w.  I have a 67' and I know the engine mounts are different so, maybe thats why The 351w was too close for comfort with my JBA's.  It was definately really close to the Gearbox.  I was even afraid it would actually touch once the suspension settled.
I scraped the JBA's and went with Shelby exhaust manifolds and had a lot more clearance.  The Shelby manifolds flow really well and Leakproof.  The difference in flow, I thought would be inconsequential for a street car.
